12 Step Program Paper

Each student will be expected to visit an open session of a 12-step program, schedule this now! It can be AA, NA, CA, or PA. You will write sort of an ethnography of where you went, what you saw, what you heard, who led the meeting, what you took from the meeting, etc. You need to Google a meeting location close to where you are located. Then, you just show up.

Next, you will find four peer-reviewed journal articles relating to the 12-step program and/or treatment programs in general. You are not allowed to use any articles you have already been assigned for this course. The source of your material used should be from a professional journal in Sociology or Criminology (e.g., Social Problems; Criminology; Journal of Crime, Journal of Marriage and Family, or Police Science; Social Forces, Crime and Delinquency, Justice Quarterly) or PsychInfo.

The length of the paper should be 5-7 pages in length, not including title page and reference page, and should be APA format. A good guide is 2 pages for the ethnography and one full page per journal article.

The assignment is worth 150 points. Late papers will be given a 0.

You must provide in your paper the date, time, location, physical address, and speaker at the meeting you attended.

The entire paper is APA format. Check out this website if you are unfamiliar with APA format: https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/560/01/

The first few pages can be written in first person since it is more of an ethnography of your visit to the meeting. But the latter part of your paper needs to be third person, as it will cover the journal articles you found. When you find your articles, you should include: what was their hypothesis/purpose of the paper, who did they sample/sample size/demographics of sample, what was their methodology/how did they collect their data, what were their main conclusions/findings.

Go to UH Libraries, Databases to find your journal articles. They need to have been published within the last 10 years.
