ACADEMIC ESSAY WRITING:
Essays usually have three interlinked parts: Introduction, Body and Conclusion. In an essay you do not describe, rather you analyse ideas (and in some cases present an argument) and discuss. In this assignment you analyse and discuss. First write up an Essay Plan, then write up essay (SEXI).
Essay Structure (Adapted from) http://students.acu.edu.au/office_of_student_success/academic_skills_unit_asu/academic_reading_and_writing/academic_writing/essay_structure
Abstract/Introduction
The introduction sets the scene for the whole essay. For an 1500 word essay, this could be a 150 word paragraph (or two paragraphs). The purpose of the introduction is to identify the topic, your point of view and the main reasons for your response.
Often this paragraph includes:
· An introductory sentence or two related directly to the particular ‘Challenges’ you have selected.
· A definition or explanation of key terms, cited from your discipline (SHRM).
· A clear statement of the focus of the essay or the position being argued (This is your ‘thesis’ statement).
· Sentences that give a clear idea of what the essay will be about (content) and the direction (scope) the essay will take.
Body
Paragraphs in the body of the essay show your discussion of the main ideas supporting your position or response to the question. Ideas from the scholarly literature give credibility and weight to your argument.
Each paragraph should link with the previous paragraph and may include:
· A topic sentence: a statement of the main idea of the paragraph.
· Explanation or supporting evidence from the scholarly readings.
· Further evidence from your reading to deepen your discussion.
· Application of ideas to a scenario or through the use of an example.
· Your discussion of, comment on and evaluation of these ideas.
· A concluding sentence that brings the paragraph to a close.
Conclusion
The purpose of the conclusion is to summarise and make final evaluative comments. It is important to refer back to the essay question.
This paragraph includes:
· A brief summary of the main ideas presented in the essay.
· Confirmation of the thesis included in the introduction.
· Final evaluative comments on the relative importance of the arguments.
· Comments on the ongoing significance of the topic as an issue that needs further discussion or investigation, including other approaches and predictions.
Note: Citations (references to other peoples’ work) are an integral part of academic writing – incorrectly citing someone’s work is plagiarism. An essay with few or no citations is a cause of concern for lecturers. This leads to thinking that the student has done insufficient reading for the essay; or, worse, as noted, that the student has plagiarised material, intentionally or not.
Note: A citation is different from a quotation. When you quote someone else's work you use that writer's actual words; use quotation marks or other special formatting (name, date, page number). When you cite someone else's work, you simply refer to it, normally by using the author's name – either in-text (date in brackets) or both name and date in brackets. There are a number of citation systems used in academic writing: You will use APA.

1. Introduction: Emerging Challenges for HRM Practitioners
(150 words)
On separate page
The purpose of the introduction is to identify the topic, your point of view and the main reasons for your response.
Often this paragraph includes:
· An introductory sentence or two related directly to the particular ‘Challenges’ you have selected.
· A definition or explanation of key terms, cited from SHRM.
· A clear statement of the focus of the essay or the position being argued (This is your your ‘thesis’ statement)……e.g. Key challenges being faced by HR practitioners in the future
· Sentences that give a clear idea of what the essay will be about (content) and the direction (scope) the essay will take.
(Suggestion: Start with an introductory sentence on the organisation involved, what is does and where it does it and how SHRM is involved. Next sentence(s) introduce the three selected ‘Challenges’ this company will face in the future and why they are of particular importance to this company. Add a supporting citation/reference in-text to support the importance of each of the ‘Challenges’ -- This validates why these ‘Challenges’ are important.)
Type Introduction here.
ON SEPARATE PAGE
2. Body: Challenges Analysed & Discussed
(1000 - 1200 words)
This is the essential ‘body’ of the essay: The paragraphs in the body of the essay show your discussion of the main ideas supporting your position or response to the questions (Three ‘Challenges’ selected). Ideas from the scholarly literature give credibility and weight to your argument (So use them…..from credible sources!).
As a guide to starting to write up your body, use the ‘SEXI’ structure below:
S: A Topic Sentence. What the paragraph is going to be about. Name the ‘Challenges’ and how each are linked in terms of strategic HRM.
E: A full Explanation of the point you’re making in this paragraph. This should make up the bulk of your paragraph.
X: eXamples or justifications that back up what you’ve said in that paragraph. Use supporting research, citations, etc.
I: Why is this point Important? Explain why this point is important to the essay as a whole. What’s the significance of this point to the essay topic?
Note: You may find that using a SWOT analysis, and/or a comparative SWOT analysis, useful in indentifying, comparing and contrasting relative strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats for each of the ‘Challenges’, and allow you to combine and contrast concepts more easily. (Template in Appendices).
Type your ‘body’ here.
3. Conclusion
(50 – 100 words)
Conclusion
The purpose of the conclusion is to summarise and make final evaluative comments. It is important to refer back to the essay question/Challenges (and perhaps note their SWOT elements as a guide).
.
This section includes:
· A brief summary of the main ideas presented in the essay.
· Confirmation of the thesis included in the introduction.
· Final evaluative comments on the relative importance of the arguments.
· Comments on the ongoing significance of the topic as an issue that needs further discussion or investigation, including other approaches and predictions.
Type your conclusion here.
FINAL EDITING: TAKE ALL THE PARTS OF THE ESSAY AND MAKE CERTAIN THAT THEY CONCEPTUALLY LINK…..THAT WHAT YOU INCLUDE IN THE ABSTRACT/INTRODUCTION IS A REAL SYNOPSIS OF THE BODY, AND THAT YOUR BODY IS LINKED TO CONCEPTS AND FLOWS WELL, AND THAT ALL DISCUSSION IS BROUGHT TO A NATURAL END IN THE CONCLUSION. ALSO, LOOK AT YOUR REFERENCING AND USE OF CREDIBLE LITERATURE AND ADD/INCLUDE RELEVANT IN-TEXT REFERENCING (AND MULTIPLE REFERENCING IN-TEXT) WHERE APPLICABLE.
