Activity: Play Word Lottery

Teacher will print out a couple of nouns and verbs. Each noun and verb would contain a picture representing the word. The teacher will cut out the words in slips of paper to be able to place it into a hat or bag. Each student will be encouraged to draw one/two words from the hat/bag depending on the level of the students. Every student would get a minute to come up with a sentence that uses the two words they picked out from the bag/hat. Student’s will be encouraged to write down their sentence and present it to the group. Once all students have read their sentence using their words; the teacher will collect the words to play another round.

Rational

Having the students write down their sentences and read/ present them to their peers would help them develop their skills. The more you practice reading and writing in a language it help you become comfortable in understand the language and speaking it as well. This activity aligns with the common core standard “CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.RF.1.4 A-C Read with sufficient accuracy and fluency to support comprehension” (Common Core State Standards 2018). It also aligns with the English Language Proficiency Standard “ELP- 1.2 Construct meaning from oral presentations and literary and informational text through Grade appropriate listening, reading, and viewing” (Council of Chief State School Officers n/a). This activity is very engaging and gives every student an opportunity to be able to have fun while practicing and developing their skills in English Language. Teachers can word one on one with students that need the extra guidance if they are in the pre-production and/or early production stages. The teachers can also group the students and let them help one other brainstorm because sometimes students just need the motivation of individuals in the same age group as themselves instead of their teachers.
