Assessment 2 Business Problem and the IT Solution

Overview

Write three pages in which you describe a business problem or challenge and the new or updated information technology solution that could solve the problem.

Note: Developing a business proposal requires specific steps that need to be executed in a sequence. The assessments in this course are presented in sequence and must be completed in order.

Identifying a problem is just the first step in determining an IT solution. It is important that the identified solution meets the needs of many stakeholders.

By successfully completing this assessment, you will demonstrate your proficiency in the following course competencies and assessment criteria:

Competency 1: Examine business goals to determine benefits from information technology and information systems.

Explain appropriate business requirements for an IT solution. Competency 2: Evaluate various information technology roles needed in organizations.

Describe the stakeholders involved in the decision making for an IT solution. Competency 3: Plan a strategy for designing and employing an information system to meet business goals.

Develop a proposal for an IT solution. Competency 5: Communicate effectively

Communicate effectively in a professional manner consistent with the standards and conventions of contemporary business and the IT community.

With whom would you talk to identify the problem? Who are the key stakeholders who could help you identify the needs? How has the customer who will be using the IT solution changed? What trends do you need to follow to be sure your business or organization stays current?

Edvinsson and Aderinne (2013) suggest some of the following questions to ask in their book Enterprise Architecture Made Simple:

Consider your own company's organizational structure . When was the last time it was changed, and how much time passed since the change before that? An organization chart is not a stable base for a long- term architecture. It is also important to consider your business processes; will we continue doing things as we are doing them today? Or will we have the freedom to reorganize the processes? If we want to improve the quality of our products and services, increase operational performance, or start doing something new, we have to change our business processes. We expect the processes to be flexible rather than stable.

PreparationPreparation

Using the same company or organization from Assessment 1, determine a business problem or challenge that requires a new information technology solution or an updated information technology solution.

Choose a problem you are familiar with as well as a technology solution. Think about information systems you have worked with and the business goals those systems helped to meet.

Are the problems caused by an inability to be flexible and to make changes quickly? What could you propose that might solve a specific problem, while addressing this need for the IT system or systems to be continuously improved and flexible enough to adapt to change? What might you propose that would provide an overall perspective to a problem, rather than meeting the needs of a specific department or individual?
