The poem “The Weary Blues” was written by Langston Hughes. When I saw the title of this poem. I felt interesting that the “Blues” can mean a form of music origination from black people, and also refer people’s depressed and sad mood. In the poem, Hughes uses a lot of sad blues music rhythm and black man language to indicate black people’s life is poor and terrible. And the only way to change this situation is that black people should find their confident to establish a sense of identity and pride in their own nation culture. That’s why the blues music become the best form to address black people’s voice. So, through this poem, Hughes expresses his thought and his desire in his mind.
There are 35 lines in this poem, Hughes uses lots of alliteration and end rhyme to let this poem has a strong musicality. At the same time, this is a free verse poem. There three lines form a verse, and the rhyme is aab. I divided this poem into two parts. The first part of the poem, Hughes uses a lot of long word sounds, making the rhythm of the whole poem soothing and low. That gives readers a feeling of sad and powerlessness. In the other part, Hughes uses a lot of black spoken and slangs to change the slow rhythm before, that makes me has a different feeling about this poem.
