Construct an argument in which you take a stance on the following subject:

Social media is the topic of some heated debate. Some assert that it is good for individuals, some claim that it harms them. Others argue for social media’s positive or negative effect on social-media-saturated societies as a whole.

Read the articles provided, and do some research of your own, gathering at least two articles, and form a thesis on whether social media is good or bad, helpful or harmful.

You may choose whether you want to focus on social media’s effect on teens, adults, individuals, communities, or societies as a whole. Make your argument as specific and focused as possible.

This draft should be 3-4 pages in length, should have a correctly formatted, MLA works cited page. (Note: the works cited page does NOT contribute to the page length. The body of the essay should reach the page requirement.)

Checklist: Things to be sure to include in your essay:

· A clear thesis statement placed at the end of the introductory paragraph. An essay without a clear thesis statement can’t make a passing grade.

· A clear organizational strategy, with topic sentences and an argument that supports the argument in your thesis statement.

· An introduction that gives me some background on the approach that you are taking to the subject.

· Plenty of supporting evidence from your sources. (This isn’t a book report, though. Make sure that the paper focuses on your own argument, using the sources as support.)

Proper MLA formatting, including in-text citations and works cited page. (Check the Little Seagull Handbook or owl.purdue.edu to make sure your formatting is right.)
