Set up in 1987 with manufacturing, design and engineering facilities spread in Pune, Honeywell Automation India Ltd. (HAIL) is a listed company on the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) and the National Stock Exchange of India Limited (NSE) and is a leader in providing integrated automation and software solutions. It serves as public subsidiary of Honeywell International Inc. with more than 2700 employees based in 8 offices in India. HAIL also has the unique distinction of being one of the first automation companies in India to be awarded dual certification of ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001.

Honeywell International Inc. (Honeywell) is a diversified technology and manufacturing company serving customers worldwide. The company offers aerospace products and services; control sensing and security technologies for buildings, homes and industry; turbochargers; automotive products; specialty chemicals; fibers; electronic and advanced materials; and process technology. It has a presence in the U.S., Europe, Canada, Asia and Latin America. The company was founded in 1985 and headquartered in Morristown, New Jersey with 130,000 employees in 2010. HAIL has five business units: Honeywell Process Solutions (HPS), which serves core industrial sectors of refining, oil and gas, pulp and paper, metal and cement; Honeywell Building Solutions (HBS), which provides solutions and services for facilities, such as commercial and industrial buildings, information technology (IT) and IT enabled services industry, hospitals, hotels and airports; Environment and Combustion Control (ECC), which offers environmental and combustion products and solutions to commercial, hospitality and industrial segments; Sensing and Control (S&C), which provides various sensors and switches to manufacturing and automobile industry and serves primarily original equipment manufacturers in various manufacturing industries, and Global Services, which addresses manufacturing and engineering services needs of Honeywell along with some other non Honeywell customers across the globe.

The company’s major business segments are automation and control solutions, aerospace, specialty materials and transportation systems. Its automation and control solutions segment is engaged in the business of home automation solutions. It provides environmental and combustion controls, sensing controls, security and life safety products and services, and process automation and building solutions and services for homes, buildings and industrial facilities. Its home automation products include control panels, wireless burglary, LYNX, keypad, magnetic contacts, PIR: Passive infrared motion detector (PIR), sensors, Indoor/Outdoor wireless sensor.

1.1.3 Financial review

The company recorded overall revenues of $33.4 billion in 2010 compared to $30.9 billion in 2009. Its Automation and Control Solutions generated $13.749 billion revenue in 2010 compared to $12.611 billion in 2009, an increase of 9%.

A growth of 8.09% is observed in the financial year 2009-10 over the previous year. This is a sign of a recovering market. The highest sales, $36.5 billion, were recorded in the year 2008.

1.1.4 Strategy

Honeywell is the India’s largest building automation solutions provider and a leader in energy efficiency offerings. In fact buildings solutions is a $200-million market for Honeywell in India today. The company is more focused on energy efficiency rather than alternative energy or energy substitution focus. the strategy is to focus on controls and materials for insulation, etc, to keep energy losses at the minimal.

The company is focusing on R&D activities and expanding its business in India. India is one of the most important global markets for the Honeywell Security Group and its fastest growing market in the world. The company also plans to expand its business in India by partnering with major companies in the country.

During year 2009, Honeywell got several new contracts in each of the three focus areas. The intelligent buildings space got several major projects from ICICI Bank, Delhi Metro, HCL Technologies, TCS and Bharti Airtel. In the field of operational efficiency, the company got major after market services contracts from ICICI Bank, TCS, TTSL and Hyderabad Airport. The company also got Energy Contracts from the Renaissance (leveraging the Clinton Climate Initiative), Titan, Thermax, Rahejas, TATA Steel and SKF during the year.

New Product

Lighting control manufacturer Lutron Electronics announced the expansion of its line of temperature controls with the addition of a co-branded Honeywell touchscreen thermostat called TouchPRO. The combination of Lutron and Honeywell technology aims to offer consumers the convenience of controlling heating and cooling systems to save energy throughout the home. The thermostat communicates with Lutron systems that also control lights, shades and stand-by power from small appliances.

New Product

Honeywell Life Safety, a business unit of Honeywell India, recently introduced the S300 range of smoke detector in the Indian market. This latest development from System Sensor India enhances the functionality of the conventional detector, incorporating many of the advanced features previously only provided in an analogue addressable unit. The new features in S300 have been combined to increase the ability of the fire detection system to give greater protection to a building and its occupants by reacting more swiftly to an incipient fire without false and nuisance alarms also rising, the release further noted.

Honeywell announced the acquisition of E-Mon LLC (U.S.), a leading manufacturer of electric sub-metering products and systems.  The acquisition will enable Honeywell to offer a more complete energy efficiency portfolio to a broader customer base, and strengthen its offerings in support of the smart grid.

Honeywell announced the launch of its MoMas Smart Home product family in Asian countries and regions, including India. Grouped under the MoMas family are the Honeywell Community-wide Integrated Smart Home Solutions HS-7000 Series, the Honeywell Standalone Smart Home Solution HRIS-1000 Series and the Honeywell Wireless Lighting Control System C1/G1/G2 Series. The MoMas product line embodies Honeywell's commitment with higher security, greater comfort and lower energy consumption. With a fingertip tap of any Wi-Fi device, homeowners can control their home temperature, ventilation, lighting, curtains, security, elevator and other home appliances anywhere, anytime. The MoMas Smart Home systems are products of Honeywell's leadership and core expertise in automation and control technologies, and particularly in security and energy management.

TES SEZ Park near Madurai The Electronic Corporation of Tamil Nadu (ELCOT) allotted 4.5 acres to Honeywell Technology Solutions Lab Pvt Ltd, Bengaluru, on a 99-year lease for its IT/ITES business at its IT/ITES Special Export Zone (SEZ) Park near Madurai.

ELCOT developed the SEZ park spread over 28.91 acres at an investment of Rs.32 crore at Ilandhakulam village.

For the infrastructure facilities, it spent Rs.7.5 crore. It also constructed an IT building of 50,000 sq.ft. at Rs.16 crore. The company works on next-generation product lines and technologies including avionics, navigation air safety products, security solutions, building management systems, process control systems, and advanced and infrastructure management services for Indian and global initiatives.
