Overview

Write 1–2 pages identifying software with detailed definitions and descriptions. Write 1–2 pages in which you describe the chronological progression of storage devices.

By successfully completing this assessment, you will demonstrate your proficiency in the following course competencies and assessment criteria:

Competency 1: Communicate effectively. Communicate in a manner that is clear and free from errors that detract from the overall message.

Competency 2: Apply information literacy skills. Uphold academic ethical standards by using accurate and complete citations and references.

Competency 4: Analyze basic IT principles. Discuss new developments in storage devices. Explain how productivity is related to storage devices.

Competency 6: Describe IT structure within a business environment. Describe the five various types of software. Describe how users are impacted by storage devices in a professional environment.

Context

Computer software are programs that are required by the computer hardware to execute expected functions. The programs consist of executable code specific to a central processing unit (CPU). The groups of binary values hold the instructions for the computer. There are a variety of programming "languages" such as HTML, Java, Python, SQL, C, C++, and Swift that will simplify the design process.

Productivity software includes the general categories of word processing, spreadsheets, databases, project management, finance, file management, and enterprise computing. There are desktop, mobile, and Web applications. These programs allow you to enter text, numbers, images, and other media; edit (manipulate) the document or project; format; store the content; and distribute the content. It is critical that software be maintained for currency.

Programming and coding is enjoying renewed attention, with specialized coding academies becoming popular. Familiarity in this area is a big plus for your overall academics and professional opportunities.

Input is the data and/or instructions entered into the memory of a computer. While the mouse was a revolutionary concept, you now have many choices, and the keyboard remains a primary input device. Touchscreens have evolved, along with smaller-sized tablets (with keyboard options). Output is a term with varied meaning. It is your result, draft, deliverable, and report. It is also the format it takes, whether paper, a slide presentation, or media. Output media or storage media are devices that over time have included floppy disks, RFID tags, flash drives, and now includes cloud storage. Output also implies permanence and preservation of data that is available for recall.

Overview

Productivity software and applications offer new dimensions to computing. Interestingly, the development of an idea, such as a tag that can be attached to an item with discoverable information, must be designed along with a reader device. The reader device must have a method of transmission to scan the tag and transmit that information back to a database or software application for recording and analysis. Although a simple example, it reiterates the basic communication scenario of a device to send information over a network (of some kind) to a compatible device to decipher the information.

Once software transmits data, the question becomes where to store it. Storage is a critical component of computing machinery output. Data, information, documents, and media require a protected method of storage that is accessible and well-organized for retrieval. While it may be a physical device, we now have the alternatives of using the cloud or a virtual storage site. Each method has specific advantages and disadvantages, including personal and professional preferences.

Instructions

You have been recently promoted to IT manager and have been asked to analyze the current software and storage. Then you will need to present to the CIO the various software available as described below. You will also need to present to the CIO information about the progression of storage devices, new developments in storage devices, and how productivity is related to storage devices, along with how storage devices impact users.

Part 1

Read the following brief descriptions of software. Write 1–2 pages identifying the software by name, a detailed definition, and description.

Business users might use it for annual reports, marketing, and newsletters. Personal users might produce flyers, calendars, and business papers. This technology uses radio signals to transmit with a tag in or attached to an object, animal, or even person. They are often used in retail, inventory, tickets, or to access monitored environments. This code stores information in a vertical and horizontal direction. It stores information that requires a reader for interpretation that interacts with a Web site.

Part 2

Using research from the resources, the Capella Library, or the Internet, write 1–2 pages in which you describe the chronological progression of storage devices. Include:

1. Instances that spurred new development.

2. The effect on productivity and storage practices.

3. The impact on users in a professional environment.
