12.3 OBSERVATIONAL EXERCISE
Ethical Leadership
Purpose
1. To become aware of the dimensions of ethical leadership
2. To assess how actual leaders exhibit ethical leadership
Directions
1. For this exercise, you must observe a public presentation of a leader in your community. This can be a pastor, a college president, a mayor, a city commissioner, the head of a social service agency, or some other community leader.
2. Record what you observe about the leader’s ethics in the categories that follow. Try to be thorough in your descriptions of the leader’s presentation.
Leader’s name: Jonathan Jones
Leader’s title: Assistant Manager
Occasion: Working together doing inventory
1. The character of the leader: What was the leader like? What kind of person was the leader? What were the leader’s strengths and weaknesses? Jonathan was very helpful as well as kind. He is the type of person to put someone else in front of himself if that is needed to make a task be handed easier. His strengths would be how he works with others and a weakness is though he thinks of everyone else when working, he works at a very slow pace which sometimes could hold us back.
2. The actions of the leader: How does this leader go about accomplishing goals? Where does the leader stand on (1) showing respect, (2) serving others, and (3) showing justice? He accomplishes goals by writing them down like a check list and checking them odd as they are all completed and he does this mostly a timely manner. He shows the up most respect for anyone, serves any person that he would be able to help and a s far as sowing justice, he always is doing the right thing.
3. The goals of the leader: What were the leader’s main goals? Were the leader’s goals clear to you and others in the audience? How would you assess the value and worth of those goals? His goal
include making good cash flow, making good opportunities and visibility. Yes, they were clear to me and as well as to others.
4. The honesty of the leader: What did you observe about this leader’s honesty? Was the leader open and forthright? How authentic did you find this leader to be? Honestly allows for better assessment and growth and I observed this quality in him.
5. The power of the leader: Based on French and Raven’s (1959) types of power, what kind of power did this leader exhibit? What did you observe about how this leader would use his or her power with others? On the more positive side, leaders may have power because they’re experts in their fields, or because their team members admire them.
6. The values of the leader: Based on the presentation, what do you think this leader values? What is important to this leader? What values did this leader promote in his or her presentation? We’ve distilled Bass’ ideas into a process that you can use to become a transformational leader. This involves you: creating an inspiring vision of the future, motivating people to buy into and deliver the vision, managing delivery of the vision, and building ever-stronger true based relationships with your people.

1. What is your overall assessment of this leader’s ethics? Leaders most important responsibility is to influence others to make ethically sound decisions, and that starts with leaders personally behaving ethically, according to Prince. “People are looking to other people to show them what to do” said Prince. And, he adds, Every interaction matters.
2. What specific examples in the leader’s presentation were particularly revealing of the leader’s ethics? Leaders have different kind of ethics, leaders should gain support of and a commitment from their team members to living by the organization’s shared values. Healthcare leaders and staff should have frequent conversations about ethics and not simply address these issues annually as part of compliance training. Prince said, Involve others in ethical decision making routinely.
3. Which factors of ethical leadership (character, actions, goals, honesty, power, and values) were most apparent in the leader’s presentation? Discuss. In the all above honestly and values are very important for leader, leader need to guide many people, so honestly is very important for leader to lead the group in proper way.
4. On a scale from 1 to 10, how would you describe this speaker’s ethical leadership? Defend your answer. I will give 9 out of 10 to the leader, the leader have good ethical skills so maintain the group of people.
