Adult Learning Theory

Introduction

Jack Welch, a former CEO of General Electric once said, “An organization’s ability to learn and translate that learning into action rapidly is the ultimate competitive advantage.”

Every business professional would want to have customers informed enough to readily move into action to purchase their products.

Even with a success record as that of ABC Company, the training of customers is of critical importance in perpetuating the organization’s market advantage.

The training fosters one element of a competitive market known as Guarding while broadening the company’s Market share.

A scholar, Hesse-Biber (2007), asserts that training enables customers to make informed purchasing decisions. In fact, the scholar contends that deciding to purchase a given product is like playing a game. He argues that trained customers, enjoy the process of purchasing products. This process happens because they feel a sense of joy and attainment in every goal they attain on behalf of the organization. Having knowledge about a given product makes it easy for the customers to make a purchase decision. They spend less time on the counters looking for what they want. Instead, they go straight for the commodities they need. In fact, with the modern home delivery systems, the customer only needs to place and order of the product he or she wants and the delivery is made.

The organizations primary goal is to deliver inspiring moments of happiness to their customers through the training session.

ABC has globally trained their customers on some important phases of their business. One part of the training is to educate customers on how to identify a beverage from ABC. Secondly, the company believes the health aspect and providing a clean atmosphere is vital to the success of ABC Beverages (Hung, 2013). High cleanliness standards are upheld because these are products that are meant for consumption. The content is placed on every bottle to allow the consumers to see if there are any health effects. These tools make training a critical component when attempting to ensuring competitive advantage sustainability.

4

Critical Training Elements

ABC understands the effects of competition in the global market.

As a result, in order to maximize market control the company focuses on three major elements:

Training Customers on the organization’s brand

Training customers about the health aspect of their brands

Introducing new and innovative discoveries and improvements of the products

In a bid to realize competitive advantage, some businesses may engage in unhealthy competition. When such happens, the consumer ends up suffering. However, ABC Company endeavors to give the best quality of products and services to its customers. Therefore efforts to train the customers on how they can identify, access the health benefits is of paramount importance. Dev (2012) asserts that the strength of an organizational brand plays a critical component in enhancing the competitiveness of a that brand in the market. As such, facilitating the customers, through education, to understand the uniqueness of a given brand is critical for the strength of a product in the market. This does not only ensure perpetuity of the organization’s leadership in the market but also safety of the consumer both health wise and legally to ensure that they always come back for more from the organization. Importantly, helping the customers relate with a product in such a way that they do not need to look for it on the counter plays a pivotal role in promoting the strength of a given product in the market.

5

Characteristics of the Intended Audience

Being a global business organization, ABC targets customers who manifest the following characteristics:

The customers are spread all over the world

Customers manifest cultural differences

Age and Gender of the customers vary

Customers come from different social class and financial abilities

Understanding the characteristics of an organization’s customers is of critical importance. It helps in formulating the correct training strategies to effectively deliver the training goals. International customers have varying traits in terms of culture and personalities. As such, an international organization is bound to plan and strategize to cater to the needs of the global market customers. Their different tastes and preferences which are a product of their varying cultures should be reflected in the brands that are made. As a result, ABC company conducts training of customers with the full understanding of their features including the diversity of their civilizations, age and gender as well as the capabilities to buy the products.

6

Learning Characteristics of Global Adult Customers

As observed above, customers in the global context are diverse. While they differ in age and gender, most of ABC beverages target adult customers. Consequently, the customer training planning will focus on the identifiable characteristics of adult customers.

Characteristics of Adult learners

They learn from life experiences.

They are autonomous.

They are goal oriented.

They focus on problems and possible solutions.

They emphasize being part of decision making.

www.free-power-point-templates.com

The five characteristics of adult learners shed light on the methodological approach that ABC should use to attain the organizational training goals. For instance, adults learn best from their personal experiences. In this light, the company can focus on unpleasant experiences they may have had with other beverages. Focusing on using these experiences to educate the customers on how ABC brands can transform would enable them to learn effectively. The autonomy aspect of the customers affect their choice of what to learn from and what to ignore. In this light, this trait would facilitate the choice of instructional methods that would help them learn. Importantly, adult customers focus on problems they have experienced in life and how they can overcome them. This tool would be important in guiding the training program on how ABC products can help them resolve their problems. Giving the customers the utmost power to decide on participation and engagement would emerge a fundamental move by the organization.

7

Training Models

Andragogy

Shepherd Knowles, the developer of Andragogy approach of adult learning notes that as people grow up, their learning capabilities and ways of acquiring information change.

He further argued that as a person ages, self-concept matures from one of being a dependent personality towards one of a self-directed person.

Experience gained as one grows up becomes a great learning reservoir.

Individual readiness to learn matures as they age from childhood to adulthood.

Motivation is internal and grows over the years.

These ideas will be used in formulating the customer training strategy. First, appealing to the self dependent traits the training of the customers will rely on the Andragogy principles to identify the factors that affect the autonomous decision making. The cultural perspectives, and the societal factors that influence decision making would also have an impact on the purchasing decisions. As such, building on the customer experiences will be a critical move that will make it possible to deliver training to the customers. Accordingly, since adults are the ones with the purchasing power, the andragogy method will be the most appropriate approach towards planning customer training .

8

Training Settings

Customer training settings are characterized by customers who not normally gather to learn.

ABC company will have to build on technology to reach the customers from the diversified geographical locations in the broad global setting.

Customers can only learn about products if the ABC company is able to build their interest to learn.

This opportunity would enable them to create a personal initiative for learning.

Building customer interests will play a critical role in facilitating the learning of the customers.

The customer training setting is also identified with the diversity of interests and cultural perspectives that may influence the willingness of the customers to learn. As a consequence, the instructional methods used must focus on grabbing the attention of the clients, continue with and uphold the teachings acquired during the training. The training can be advertised online and even conducted online for some parts of the world. For those who are not familiar with technology, they will have a trainer in their area to educate them on the same material as the online training.

9

Training Activities

During the preparation for the training, ABC will engage in publicizing the training.

Online advertising will be used in the promotion of the training.

Instructional and promotional messages will be used in the social media platforms.

The use of social media platforms would be used with varying global settings.

In communities where mainstream media is more popular, it will be used to engage the customers.

According to Clover & Hill (2013), customers are always reluctant when it comes to training. Most of them are busy and lack the motivation to spend their time on training. The customers targeted for training are not self-driven to attend. The lack of self-directedness to attend the training means that the company might end up spending a lot of money for training that might lack an audience. ABC plans to use a few instructional activities during training to guarantee the customers achieve his or her target goal.

Reciprocal teaching is one of the most significant methods that will be used to train the customers. This tool instructs the customers on the key strengths of ABC’S products. The best thing about this method is that it prepares the customers with the skills to show other customers wherever they go (Leberman, McDonald & Doyle, 2016). Social media and the internet are some of the technological strategies that can be used to reach those who are not available in person.

10

Technology Components

The mobile devices will update the customers about the training.

Internet services: The internet has become a critical communication element in the modern world.

Cameras: Images to educate the customers on the brands of the company will be critical.

Broadcasting tools such as audio devices will be needed for communication.

The modern world largely depends on technology. As a consequence, the company will need to carry out thorough research on the available devices and capabilities among the members of society. This knowledge will play a pivotal role in shaping the training of the customers. Using the online technology has become an instrumental tool especially in the external business communications. Online technology subdues the geographical barriers that may limit physical engagement with loyal and potential customers for the ABC company.

ABC’s training will reflect different activities which will ensure the global competitiveness of the company. Considering the potential of this training and its focus, it will offer the necessary services and processes through improved production. The training will focus on production and how the company will achieve production performance. There is also the need for focusing on the improved and increased management of its operations. Apart from the training on the proper management of the company’s processes, there is also the need of focusing on increased services such as effective creative allocations and production performance through value generation.

How can the company improve and increase its value generation for its employees? This tool can be achieved through increased and improved performance. It is also important to focus on the processes, changes, and the consumer needs to increase effective production and performance. Finally, the training will focus more on how to achieve competition in the contemporary community taking ideas and ways through competitiveness in the market.

Evaluation

Two types of evaluation will be employed in the training process.

Internal evaluation will be carried out by the company employees. It will measure:

Feasibility of the training

Prospective interest of the customers

External evaluation will involve a team of people hired to evaluate how successful the training will be.

It will evaluate the results and be carried out before and after the training.

This presentation uses a free template provided by FPPT.com

Questions will include what will be the percentage increase of the customers after the training? What are the challenges facing the training? And what could have been done differently. This will help the internal evaluators and participants in the training to measure the results. The evaluation will be carried out in three major stages. The first stage will seek to assess the feasibility of the training plan. The second will shed light on how well the training will be going on through the use of an implementation evaluation. Lastly, the organization will evaluate the effectiveness of the customer training session during and after the training has been delivered.

13

Conclusion

Customer training is of critical importance in promoting ABC products.

Encompassing the features of diversity when planning for the training will be of paramount importance.

Use of learning methodology appropriate for the adult learners will be critical.

Ultimately, matching the training activities with the characteristics of the customers and their technological capability will enhance the extent of the success during customer training.
