Gender Inequality

Gender Inequality

Difference in the status, power, and prestige women and men have in groups, collectives, and societies.

Gender and Work

The work that women and men do has the most significant impact on their status in society.

Who does what, and how that work is defined and valued, is closely linked to access to economic and social resources

Occupational Segregation

Men and women tend to concentrate in different jobs, occupations, and industries.

Index of Dissimilarity – measures the proportion of women who would have to change fields in order to be represented across occupations in the same proportion as men.

Why Is Segregation a Concern?

Substantial body of research suggests that socialization influences men and women’s participation and behavior

May create barriers to entry in certain occupations

May restrict movement of qualified and skilled individuals

There is a link between segregation and gender inequality in earnings –the gender gap is the topic of the next slide show!
