Chapter 11: Networking

Introduction

Whether you're at home, work, or out and about, chances are you'll find a Wi-Fi network that you can connect to for Internet access.

Connect to a Wi-Fi network in Windows 10

1. Select the Network icon on the taskbar. The icon that appears depends on your current connection state. If you don’t see one of the network icons (or a similar one) shown in the following image, select the Up arrow to see if it appears there.

2. Choose the Wi-Fi network you want, then select Connect.

3. Type the network password, and then select Next.

Check your network connection status

Windows 10 lets you quickly check your network connection status. And if you're having trouble with your connection, you can run the Network trouble-shooter to try and fix it.

 Select the Start button, then type settings. Select Settings > Network & internet. The status of your network connection will appear at the top. Check your network connection status.

Fix network connection issues in Windows

Make sure Wi-Fi is on. Select Start > Settings > Network & Internet > Wi-Fi. Next, select Show available networks, and if a network you expect to see appears in the list, select it, then select Connect.

Find your Wi-Fi network password in Windows

If you forgot your Wi-Fi network password, you can find it if you have another Windows PC already connected to your Wi-Fi network. After you find your password, you can use it on another PC or device to connect to your Wi-Fi network.

1. On a Windows PC that’s connected to your Wi-Fi network, do one of the following, depending on which version of Windows is running on your PC:

· On Windows 11, select the Start button, type control panel, then select Control Panel > Network and Internet  > Network and Sharing Center.

· On Windows 10, select the Start button, then select Settings  > Network & Internet  > Status  > Network and Sharing Center.

· On Windows 8.1 or 7, search for Network and, then select Network and Sharing Center from the list of results. To learn how to find out which version of Windows you have, see Which Windows operating system am I running?

2. In Network and Sharing Center, next to Connections, select your Wi-Fi network name.

3. In Wi-Fi Status, select Wireless Properties.

4. In Wireless Network Properties, select the Security tab, then select the Show characters check box. Your Wi-Fi network password is displayed in the Network security key box.

Make a Wi-Fi network public or private in Windows

When you first connect to a Wi-Fi network, you can set it as public or private—depending on the network and what you want to do:

· Private network. Use this for networks you trust, such as a network at home or work. When a network is set to private, your PC is discoverable to other devices on the network, and you can use your PC for file and printer sharing.

· Public network. Use this for networks you connect to when you’re out and about, such as a Wi-Fi network at a coffee shop. Your PC will be hidden from other devices on the network, and you can’t use your PC for file and printer sharing.

After you connect to a network the first time, you can change it to public or private at any time
