CYCS 1055- EQUITY, INCLUSION AND ANTI-OPPRESSIVE PRACTICES
Annotated Bibliography- Assignment # 5 (Week 14)
25% of Final Grade Annotated Bibliography Purpose: Annotated bibliographies are a basic component of any research project or research paper. An annotated bibliography is a list of all the sources (and summaries) that you have found to help you complete your research project or paper. You will complete this annotated bibliography as a step towards advancing your research skills in a post-secondary environment. As you progress through the CYC program you will be asked to collect, analyze, and critically think about data (information) and use that information to write essays or plan presentations. This assignment is designed to develop, and or deepen the skill of reviewing information, summarizing it, asking critical questions, and thinking about how it might be helpful. This assignment is also designed to support your growth and comfort using APA 7 to format your written work, which is a requirement for most of your academic work in college and university.
Instructions: You will choose a topic connected to this course, for example, racism, sexism, Black Lives Matter, gender identity, the idea of “inclusion”, homophobia, LGBT+ housing rights in Ontario, police brutality in Canada, Water conditions on reserves, access to secondary education for youth living on reserve. As you can see, your selection here can be wide or narrow. It is encouraged that you try to narrow your topic to gain deeper insight into something that is of interest to you.
The assignment must fulfill the following requirements:
1. Include five sources. Two of the sources must be articles from Academic Journals. The other three sources that you select can include: podcast episodes, newspaper articles, videos, community reports (here is an example of a community report: One Vision, One Voice ), music, TV shows, radio shows, etc).
2. Include a clear summary of each research source: Explain what it is about so the reader can get a clear sense of the information presented in the source. Clearly state the main argument or point and explain some of the topics and supporting reasons focused on in the text, podcast, video etc.
3. Include a brief explanation of how each source may be beneficial/helpful if you were writing an essay on the topic. Additionally, include one critique or question that you have after reading/watching that piece. Remember the question or critique must be specific to the source you are writing about.
4. Each annotation should be between 250-400 words. The word count exists as a guideline, and the annotation must fall within those parameters – however we are looking for clear, concise writing that effectively responds to the questions without redundancy. The annotation is graded for the quality of writing not the quantity of words.

Sample Annotation Using APA The following is a sample annotation taken from the OWL at Purdue website. Please note that this specific example does not include a discussion about its potential usefulness or a critique, but it does provide you with an example of a summary and the writer’s assessment of the source:
Ehrenreich, B. (2001). Nickel and dimed: On (not) getting by in America. Henry Holt and
Company.
In this book of nonfiction based on the journalist's experiential research, Ehrenreich
attempts to ascertain whether it is currently possible for an individual to live on a
minimum-wage in America. Taking jobs as a waitress, a maid in a cleaning service, and a
Walmart sales employee, the author summarizes and reflects on her work, her relationships
with fellow workers, and her financial struggles in each situation.
An experienced journalist, Ehrenreich is aware of the limitations of her experiment and the
ethical implications of her experiential research tactics and reflects on these issues in the text.
The author is forthcoming about her methods and supplements her experiences with
scholarly research on her places of employment, the economy, and the rising cost of living in
America. Ehrenreich’s project is timely, descriptive, and well-researched.
