Assignment 4

An Introduction of a New Website

I planed to create a new website with the name of Freethought. This website is aimed to offer a platform for scholars, teachers and students to share their moments of enlightenment when they find something interesting or meaning in their area. This site is aimed to offer service to scholars, teachers and students. They have three characteristics. First, they are all smart. Their smartness leads them to their enlightenment. Second, they have one or more than one area they are good at or interested in. Third, they are strict with their logic in the studying area that they are interested in.

With the name of freethought, the website will be designed as a simple forum format. In this open forum page, everyone can publish their new findings or viewpoints on the page. In order to organize the content of the website, four columns will be set up, namely scientific findings, literary findings, philosophy findings and others. Besides, if the information posted on cannot be classified into the column, the information will be deleted in time. By doing so, the valid information can be figured out directly. To achieve this goal of establishing the website, there are two functional requirements. First, the format of the website should be organized clearly and simply for the website will be full of information and if the format of the website is chaotic, the information will be immersed in the sea of posters. Second, the organizer should react quickly when he or she finds unsuitable information. The unsuitable information should be dealt with in time. As for the users, it is expected that the users should have good education background and advantages in some area. Only these users can offer valuable information so the exchange of the information can exert its functions as a platform to offer valuable thoughts and ideas.

Obviously, direct stakeholders are scholars, teachers and students. They can get further improvement on their ideas and thoughts. Different perspective and opinion from others may effectively bring them enlightenment. One day, they might truly invent or discover something that can help the society based on their original thoughts.

Another things need to mention is that due to the nature of sharing ideas, there might be plagiarism happened. Therefore, there should have a quite strict tool or system to check plagiarism and cheating. As a new website, we do not want it becomes the place or tool for doing immoral things. In this case, secondary(indirect) stakeholders can be anyone who publishes their ideas on the internet. Although it is hard, our idea is that checking as accurately as possible, which protects users’ fame to the most extent and those potential secondary stakeholders’ rights and interests.

Data requirement can’t be ignored. As a high-quality website, the Freethought should be able to collect each user’s information. Different scholars and teachers have different subject they are good at and familiar with. For students, they can be interested in different subject; therefore, the website should collect data about what subject the users are good at and interested in, and provide them other post,  information about that specific subject. For example, if a student user in interested in Chinese, he or she can see the post from a Chinese teacher and scholars who study Chinese. In this way, the student can learn more thorough, professional knowledge about Chinese, which allow him or her to they can easily access to the subject they want.

For usability requirements, posters should have tags which can let people quickly know which area of a poster is connected with; it can be added by the authors themselves directly and immediately. At the same time, readers should be able to vote for the ideal tags which can best define the posters. It is faster for authors to receive feedbacks and comments from readers associated in the same category. Secondly, for other users who are seeking for ideas, there should be a reliable search system for them to filter ideas which they are not interested in. The main purpose of having these two functions is to save users’ time.

The website is aimed to set up for scholars, teachers and students at age of 18 years old or above. They should at least start their college education. Scholars could share their latest research results and answer the questions raised by students and teachers. Teachers can use the website to exchange ideas that appear in their daily work. For students, they should have great interests in academy in some areas and they want to pursue the further research in the area. Also, they are active in learning and they can look the research question from a totally different perspective, which can offer new enlightenment. After interview two potential users via a questionnaire, the users also come up with the ideas that the website should pay attention on the quality of the posters. The posters should be supported under clear and full proves and proper citation. If the posters are not proven under the basis of detailed proves, the rightness of the posters will be judged. If the posters cannot be proven right, the information exchanged will be lack of its value. The users hope that the platform can offer enlightenment for their work or study. Therefore, they have a high-level requirement on the rightness of the information. Besides, the users also hope the website can be inserted with in-time communication tool so that the users can communicate immediately via the website. Under these two requirements, the website will be designed to use a in-time communication tool. Besides, the organizer of the website should be trained to deal with the question whether the poster is in accordance with the critique in academics. Only with detailed proves, the posters can be published on the page.
