In the previous modules, you learned about the significance of communication and training for

change implementation. You submitted your course project, a change communication plan, along

with an executive letter detailing best practices to sustain the benefits of organizational change.

Now, for this last discussion, you will summarize and share your learnings about organizational

change from this course.

In your initial post, you should address the following:

Provide an example of a previous situation where you experienced change or were

responsible for managing change. This could be either personal or professional.

Based on the change management skills covered in this course, do you think you should

have used a different approach for the example you described?

Are there any change management skills you found most relevant to your personal or

professional life? How might you apply them moving forward?

When responding to at least two of your peers' posts, consider the following:

How are the change management examples shared by your peers similar or different from

your own?

Are there any additional change management skills you would recommend to your peers

based on their examples? Support your response by referencing relevant topics from the

course.

To complete this assignment, review the Discussion Rubric.

One example of a situation in which I experienced change was approximately five months ago

at my current job. A large part of the business that I work for is rooted in the housing industry

and major changes within the company came as the housing market has reduced significantly

in volume. Senior leadership had decided to reorganize marketing to better align with the

client-centric approach that the company was doubling down on. This meant that the teams

that I worked with on a regular basis were changing rapidly, with new faces in different

business areas. We learned and adjusted as we went, as the change happened fairly quickly,

and driving toward the company's larger goals was our "north star" throughout the process.

I think in the case I provided, as in many cases, communication can always be improved. There

will always be additional opportunities to bring everyone together and discuss, but there's also

a business to run, so the best case isn't always the case. Overall, I think the change

management team could've done a better job at providing additional communication and

regular updates in order to keep everyone aligned and to provide an opportunity to ask

questions if needed.

Interpersonal skills are one of my strengths and I think that that particular skillset can be super

important in managing change. Additionally, the middle manager role seems to be the most

multi-faceted when it comes to change and understanding stakeholder needs and desires, both

from above and below, is something that I can succeed at, if given the proper resources and

information.

I recently took on a more senior role, albeit one in a different area. While the scope of my

responsibilities remained largely the same, the number of people under my purview shrank

while the weight of that obligation grew exponentially. Even though I did not doubt necessary

adjustments could be made, I was growing increasingly anxious about the results. In the past, I

was able to convey information to a large group of people effectively, but I lacked transparency

in my communications with individuals; this is an essential quality for a leader, so I hope that

working with a minor team will give me a chance to have more in-depth conversations with

individuals and gain insight from their responses and suggestions.

Transparency, being open and honest with my colleagues, and ensuring they know that trust

and an available line of communication are always there if they need or want them, was the

best strategy I could have taken. This method also allowed me to serve professionally and

personally as a role model to several of my coworkers.

The change management skill that has proven most useful is the ability to pay close attention

to detail in my professional and personal life. This skill has helped me avoid making costly

mistakes in the counts my team and I are required to perform, while in the latter, it has saved

me my job.
