Using what you have learned about academic argument from the lessons for this week, and using the three rhetorical appeals (ethos, pathos, and logos), write an academic argument in which you support or challenge Carr's conclusion that "as we come to rely on computers to mediate our understanding of the world, it is our own intelligence that flattens into artificial intelligence."

Create pathos by sharing something of your own experience of using computers or social media. Post your argument in the large group discussion forum titled "Is Google Making Us Stupid."

Respond to other students' arguments by pointing out places where they use one of the three appeals effectively. Also, point out places where their argument is not as strong as it could be. Suggest ways they could improve their argument by either using some aspect of academic argument more effectively or using one of the appeals more effectively.

This posting is worth 50 points. You will receive 30 points for posting an orignal argument that demonstrates understanding of the three appeals and the basics of academic argument and 10 points each for providing detailed feedback to your peers (up to two).

Please note in order to receive full credit for this assignment, you must follow the directions closely. This is a post first assignment. That means you will not be able to see other students' postings until you have posted your original response.

Find a visual image related to your research topic. The image can be a photograph (not a personal photograph), a drawing, a cartoon, or other visual text. Although there are many places to find images (and we will discuss other sources later in the course), the easiest and quickest way is to use Google images. Go to google.com, click on images, and then put your research topic in the search box. If you do not see the image link, just put your topic and the word "images" in the search box. Search through the images until you find one that interests you.

Once you decide on an image related to your research topic, post it in the forum and explain the main claim. What is the image trying to convince the audience of? Also, discuss how you came up with that conclusion. Be specific. Refer to details in the image that convince you that is the main claim. You might include the people in the image, the camera angles, the lighting, how the objects in the image are arranged, or other details that help the image make an argument about the topic.

Next discuss the types of appeals the image uses and the intended audience. Remember, the appeals are used to convince a specific audience of the claim. So, for example, an image of a Toyota Tacoma Truck found on the Toyota website will probably be trying to persuade the audience that they should have one. If they are trying to appeal to a younger audience, they will probably show the truck covered in mud. They will be using pathos -- an emotional appeal -- to convince the audience that the Toyota truck will lead to great muddy adventures. If they are trying to appeal to an older audience, they might have an image of a shiny and well-maintained older version of the truck. The advertisers might list the number of miles on the truck and mention that it has never broken down or needed a new engine, and they would probably include an image of a ribbon with the words #1 Truck according to Trucks Unlimited to indicate it has received awards from consumer advocacy organizations. They would be using ethos and logos to demonstrate that the truck is dependable.

Your posting about the image should be at least 100 words and it should use AT LEAST ONE of these words: ethos, pathos, and logos. Of course, it might use all three of these words. This is a post first discussion forum. You will not be able to see your peers' postings until you post yours.

Finally, look at several other student images and respond to the analysis provided with the image. Do you agree with what the student has identified as the main claim of the image? Do you think they have identified the claims appropriately? If so, explain why you agree with them and if possible, give them additional reasons for the appeal(s) you have chosen. If not, ask questions and point out what they have missed that might have affected their analysis.

This assignment is worth 20 points. You will receive 10 points for posting and explaining your image and 5 points each for responses to other students' image (up to two).  Be sure to respond to students who do not have responses first so that everyone receives feedback.
