Select a company in the news and apply one or more of the strategic concepts from Chapter 1 to the company. Be sure to state what concept and page from the textbook you are applying (use APA guidelines). Examples could be such concepts as a romantic view of leadership versus control view, competitive advantage, four key attributes, realized versus intended strategy, corporate governance, or stakeholder management. Next, critically evaluate the applications proposed by two of your classmates.

I also have to agree with you. Nike has been very successful in using top players to endorse their shoes and have been very successful at it. For whatever reason other companies have not been as successful and that is what gives this firm their advantage.

I choose Amazon as my company of choice. When thinking about Amazon, they are an online powerhouse and are a leader in being an environmentally responsible company. They capitalized on consumers' online ability to get books with an efficient and effective method through the internet. The book spoke about how it surpassed the physical location with “online book buying (e.g., Amazon) and digital books an overwhelming environmental force” (Gregory G. Dess, Gerry McNamara, Alan B. Eisner, Seung-hyun Lee, 2019). The Borders competitor had no way to stop this competitor. Amazon is a mega house for all things purchased online versus at a store. With buy it now features and same-day delivery, Amazon is the epitome of Operational Effectiveness that other online retailers are mimicking their success. Amazon is environmentally conscious by using alternative power sources for its facilities and vehicles.

After reading about Strategic Implementation in the first chapter, the first company I though of was SquareSpace. As most may knw, squarespace is an online company that helps people build websites. They have their own templates, but also allow users to create their own. The company prides themselves on having a technical support team meant to help with the building process of the website. Specifically, I see SquareSpace implementing creative and organization design elements strategically to make the experience easier for the users. For instance, SquareSpace also works shipping companies to provide discounts for clients using their platform to create their own business. With this in mind, the company has created a service for customers that takes out middlemen and makes their own experience easier. They wouldn't have been able to accomplish this without strategically implementing design elements to work with companies and clients alike.

For this post, I chose to discuss the competitive advantage of Pfizer Pharmaceutical Company. Pfizer, along with Moderna and Johnson & Johnson, are the only U.S. pharmaceutical companies who have obtained FDA approval for their COVID-19 vaccines. This approval and resulting sales of this vaccine has given Pfizer a competitive advantage in their industry. Our textbook defines competitive advantage as, "a firm’s resources and capabilities that enable it to overcome the competitive forces in its industry(ies)" (Dess et al., 2019, p. 7).
There are multiple pharmaceutical companies who operate within the United States. I can name about twenty manufacturers just off the top of my head. When I did a Google search for U.S. pharmaceutical companies I found many sites that listed hundreds of companies. One of these sites was Drugs.com (Drugs, 2021). For Pfizer to be only one of three U.S. companies

to have a vaccine for a global pandemic is a huge competitive advantage. According to a recent article in Healthline, "The Pfizer vaccine, also given in two doses, is expected to cost $19.50 a dose" (Ries, 2020). That calculates to $39 per individual who chooses the Pfizer vaccine. Obviously, with so few competitors this modest $39 per patient cost will turn into a proverbial gold mine for Pfizer. Initially these costs will be covered by the U.S. government, however, I use that term very loosely. The government doesn't have some secret bank account hidden out for these emergencies. Anything that is labeled "government funded" would be more accurately described as "tax payer funded". No matter how we choose to break it down, or allot the costs, Pfizer will still receive reimbursement for their product increasing their bottom line.
Where Pfizer differs from the other U.S. competitors is in how they are distributing the vaccine. The other companies have partnered with McKesson to distribute their product. Pfizer has chosen to handle their own distribution. According to Pfizer's website, "We will have a Pfizer 24/7 control tower monitoring and tracking all shipments to ensure each shipments gets to where it needs to go at the right time and at the right temperature and take action if needed along the way. Once opened, our containers can be used for temporary storage for up to 30 days, if the units are re-iced every five days – effectively making them temporary deep freezers" (Pfizer, 2020). This approach cuts out any overhead from partnering with McKesson. Since Pfizer's containers can be reused, and also used for storage purposes, they will theoretically pay for themselves in the long run. The other company's partnership with McKesson is presumably a long term (and unrecoverable) expense.
Pfizer seems pretty confident in their delivery system as their website goes on to state, "We know our approach works because throughout our Phase 3 study, we successfully delivered our vaccine to more than 44,000 people at 150 clinical trial sites in 6 countries and across 39 U.S. states" (Pfizer, 2020). In other words, they have already trialed their method and have already started making their product available globally. Much of their global expansion will depend upon the approval of each country's equivalent of our FDA. However, it appears that Pfizer is already way ahead of their competitors in terms of delivery and in the global market.
