1 Directions

STEP 1:

Print the entire document out and before you start print out your name on the

assignment, you may laugh at this instruction but I cannot begin to tell you the

number of times that I have had this happen on tests

STEP 2:

Answer the questions as fully as you can, showing as much work as you think is

necessary, if you are using a calculator you must let me know by stating ’used

calculator here’ and then stating what command(s) you used to get the calcu-

lator to do what you needed it to do.

STEP 3:

Scan this as a PDF, for those of you without a scanner handy you can us any

smart phone app ”pic to PDF” converter to create a PDF. Make sure to do this

in a reasonable quality so that it is legible.

STEP 4:

Upload your PDF into CANVAS

Note: As this is the first time I am using these assignments I will be ”nicer” with the grading than I might normally be. For bonus points I would love to here from you with feed back on what worked and what didn’t work with this assignment :)

2 Problem Set

Please answer the following as clearly as possible in the space pro- vided for the problem. A good rule of thumb is that if your instructor has to hunt for your work or the solution you probably won’t get the maximum credit available.

Additionally refer back to the following table to complete the questions

Gender Name Letter Grade Percent Time Female Arya C 70 25 Male Jaime D 60 30 Female Cersei B 80 35 Female Ygritte D+ 65 30 Male Bran A 95 40 Male Bronn F 20 15 Male Samwell B 80 40 Female Brienne C+ 75 35 Male Petyr A 95 5 Male Eddard C 70 40 Female Daenerys B 80 30 Female Sansa B+ 85 40 Male Tyrion A 90 35 Female Missandei A 100 35

1. Classify each of the columns by its ”level of measurements”, and give a short, even one word would do, reason why you labeled it as such

(a) Gender

(b) Name

(c) Letter Grade

(d) Percentage

(e) Time

2

2. Find the mean median and mode of the percentage scores for following groups:

(a) Female

(b) Male

(c) Everybody

3. (a) What is the formula you would use to find the standard deviation of only the Female scores? And what is the stan- dard deviation?

(b) Would you use the same formula if I had asked for the scores for Bran, Tyrion, Bronn, Jaime, Samwell, Petyr, and Eddard, a not so random sample picked from the pop- ulation? If you think it is the same write ”same” and explain why you think this is the case. If you think different, write out that formula, and please give your justification.

4. For the purposes of this problem we have been, for the most part, treating this data set as one complete population. In the following I will describe a hypothetical sampling process that could have generated this data set, I want you to identify for me what type of sampling was used, as well as what key-words I used in the description of the sampling

(a) The data was selected by randomly choosing one class from an entire school

(b) The data was selected by randomly choosing 6 boys and 6 girls from the entire school

(c) The data was selected by randomly selecting one grade level and testing all of those students

4

5. Make a scatter plot of time taken to complete the test verses percentage, add to this plot the following:

(a) label the axis

(b) plot and label the line of best fit, just write out y = mx + b above it

i. what is the slope

ii. what is the intercept

iii. what is the R2 value

(c) Make a prediction of what a persons score would be if they took 120 minutes to take the test. Does this make sense? Why/Why not?

5

6. Create two box plots side by side on the same plot, one for the female scores, the other for the male scores

(a) Which group has the largest spread?

(b) Which has the highest average score?

(c) What does this graph tell you about the two groups?

7. Make a Pie Chart of the Letter Grades, ignore the plus and minus, make sure to include a legend, do your best to make the wedges as close to to the correct size as you can, I get it that you will be doing this by hand :)
