Whereas Chapter 1 of A Mercy (pp. 1-9) is narrated in first-person by Florens in the year 1690, Chapter 2 (pp. 10-41) switches to third-person point of view, and focuses on Jacob Vaark in the year 1682. Depending entirely on this second chapter -- and not on other parts of the book or on anything that you read about the book! -- describe Jacob Vaark. By this, I mean (a) state specific facts, such as age, occupation, family, appearance, class, etc (and cite particular passages where we learn this information); and (b) describe his personality, including interests, motivations, fears, hopes, and concerns (citing passages to ground your answers in textual evidence). Then, speculate: what compels Jacob to purchase a little girl (Florens) from D'Ortega?

Read from “Don’t be afraid…” to “The heat was still pressing, his bed partner overactive, yet he slept well enough. Probably because his dreams were of a grand house of many rooms rising on a hill above the fog.”
