After completing this topic, you will be able to:

· Create an Online Casebook of secondary sources

Introduction to the Online Casebook

From the Working Bibliography that you created last week, you will choose seven (7) sources that best answer the questions you posed in your Research Proposal. Those sources will form the basis for the Online Casebook.

You might be asking, what is that? An online casebook is an annotated bibliography posted online. What is an  annotated bibliography ? To better understand the term, try breaking it down and thinking about the different parts of the word. This will help you understand that the meaning and pronunciation start to come together. An-Note-Ta-Tion almost sounds like a note-taking. Bibliography is more familiar especially since you just completed a Working Bibliography. An annotated (a note taking) bibliography means a list of sources with notes about each source.

Briefly, the online casebook includes summaries, notes, and analysis of sources that will be quoted and paraphrased in the final essay. It will be posted on your ePortfolio website. You have already had practice with the skills that are required, but the assignments do require that you set aside several hours for reading and analysis.

If you've taken ENG 1101 at Sinclair recently, you have already had some experience with the annotated bibliography. Please note that in ENG 1201, the annotated bibliography requires more information. The summary is more detailed and the ENG 1201 annotated bibliography includes an evaluation of the credibility of each source and how it might be used in your research essay.

To meet the learning objectives for this topic, you will complete these activities. Print this page and use it as a checklist.

· Review the Introduction and Objectives page

· Read the online lesson The Online Casebook.

· Using the CRAAP and BEAM method for evaluating sources, identify the seven best sources listed on your working bibliography.

· Create a new page on your Weebly Website (the E-Portfolio) and title it Casebook.

· Post a bibliography of the seven best sources on the Online Casebook page.

· Below each of the seven bibliographic entries, post a summary and evaluation following the guidelines and samples posted in this module.

· Be sure to publish your website and post your address in the Discussion Forum.

· Respond to at least two other online casebooks posted on the websites answering the specific questions posted in the forum.

The Online Casebook

To begin to put the Online Casebook together, review the sources you listed on your Working Bibliography. Choose seven that look like they come the closest to answering the research questions you posted in your Research Proposal. If, after reading and researching further into your topic, you realize that you do NOT have seven that address the issue you are writing about, go back to the library databases and find more sources. Keep searching until you have seven.

Choosing the seven sources for the Online Casebook is important because you are going to spend considerable time reading, summarizing, and critiquing these sources. You might spend as much as eight hours to complete the assignment. Make sure you take as much time as necessary to read and choose sources that answer the questions you posed in your research proposal. The work that you do for the Online Casebook (an online annotated bibliography) will form the basis for your research paper. The time you put into this assignment will pay off when you go to write the paper because much of what you create for the annotated bibliography can go directly into your paper to support the ideas that you are sharing with your readers. This assignment is one of the most important steps in writing the paper. The more time you give to this assignment, the better your paper will be.

Once you have decided on the seven most relevant sources, you will format a bibliography just like you did in the last topic. Post a page in your weebly.com portfolio (your e-portfolio that you created in the first week) and copy and paste the bibliography in that page. Then for each source, add a direct link to the source. Remember to list the sources alphabetically and then beneath each source, you will provide the following information:

1. A summary of the source. The first sentence of each annotation should state the author's first and last name, the name of the source, where it appeared, when it appeared and the thesis or main point of the source. Then write a summary that summarizes or paraphrases the main points and ideas of the article. Don t just tell us what the article is about, but tell us what it says . Use specifics from the articles. Include relevant details. Use the guidelines for writing summaries to help you do this and use your own words. Don't quote the source; instead, write what it says in your own words.

2. A mini-critical analysis. What is the writer s purpose in writing this article? (This question will allow you to assess whether or not you have enough different perspectives on the topic.) Who is the audience for this piece? Discuss the context in which this piece was written. In other words, how did where and when it was written affect what was said in the source?

3. A brief evaluation of the piece. Answer these questions: Who is the writer? How do you know the author is credible? How do you know that the author has the adequate information to write the article? How do you know the source is reliable? This is especially important for Internet sources. Here you can refer to the questions on the CRAAP worksheet that you used in the website critique topic.

4. A brief discussion of relevance. End each annotation with a brief discussion of how you will use this information in your research paper. Be specific. Discuss how it will answer the questions you have posed in your Research Proposal or discuss how it will help you to articulate your position or stance toward the topic in the final paper. If you cannot use it to answer the questions or set up a section of your final paper, consider finding a different source.

If you complete the annotated bibliography correctly, it can be used to support the claims that you make in your final research essay. Often the summaries can be cut and pasted from the annotated bibliography directly into your paper. If this step of the research process is completed correctly, you will have the major portion of your research project already written.

If you do not complete this step thoroughly, you will have difficulty getting the page length required for the final paper. You may also have to complete more research before you start writing.

Note: This is the ONLY assignment you have this week because it is an important and time-consuming assignment.

Click on the Online Casebook tab to see an Online Casebook formatted correctly (Please note the citations are in the 7th edition MLA format and so yours may look a little different as you are following the MLA 8th edition):  http://tiffbullion.weebly.com/casebook.html

· Once you are finished with the bibliography, be sure to publish your website and post your address in the discussion forum. Take a look at least two other websites and provide feedback on the casebooks. Answer the specific questions listed in the discussion forum to receive full credit.

Question 1

After you have completed the Online Casebook assignment, following the guidelines outlined in the lesson, post your the web address for the E-Portfolio in this discussion forum.

Also, give feedback to at least two other students postings by answering the questions below. Use full sentences when answering the questions so that students know what you are evaluating. Be specific and point out ways the student can improve their casebooks.

Answer these questions:

1. Does the casebook contain at least seven sources related to the topic?

2. Look at each of the seven sources. Referring to the source by author's last name or title, discuss each of the seven sources individually:

· Is the source summarized sufficiently so that without reading the article, you have enough information to understand the purpose of the source? In other words, does the summary actually summarize the article or does it just list the topics discussed? (This is very important!)

· After the summary for each source, does the writer indicate why this source meets the criteria for a reliable, credible source? If not, let the writer know what sources are not critiqued.

· Does each annotation detail how the source answers the questions for the research project or how it will be used in the final paper?

After you receive the feedback from your team members, feel free to revise the casebook for a better grade. This assignment forms the foundation for the research project. Don't skimp!

You can earn 20 points for this assignment. You will receive 10 points for posting the correct e-Portfolio address and 5 points each for complete responses to other students' postings (up to two).
