One of the major environmental issues is pollution specifically water pollution. Almost 80% of the wastewater globally is dumped into the environment without being treated which leads to pollution of water bodies. The widespread issue of polluted water affects the health of most people. According to research, polluted water kills more people than war and other forms of violence combined annually (Denchark, 2018). Just a small proportion of safe water, approximately 1% is accessible for consumption. People comfortably sip clear glasses of water without the knowledge that tap water in most countries is polluted metals such as copper and lead. The most common sources of water contamination include agricultural practices, oil pollution, sewage, and radioactive substances.

On a personal level, water pollution has an impact on daily activities. Despite assurance from sanitation firms that water is safe, accidental, and illegal released of untreated sewage gets its way into reliable water bodies. His means that everything around us is polluted which means there is the existence of waterborne pathogens in the water we consume. The disease-causing bacteria in untreated sewages is invisible and therefore consuming clear water is not an assurance of safe drinking water.

Water infrastructure has been associated with increased contamination crises. Water pipes have been linked with the presence of lead in water. Additionally, heavy metals such as mercury and arsenic have been traced in consumption water which poses a greater health risk. Ingestion of these toxic substances results in a wide range of health issues among them cancer, impaired brain function, and hormone disruption (Denchark, 2018). Unborn babies are the most affected because, upon the ingestion of the substances by women, the stated health issues may be prevalent in children.

PROFESSOR COMMENTS

30 point- Meets “Proficient” criteria and provides exceptional detail in the selection of a pressing environmental issue that has personal relevance

25.5 point- Composes a brief introduction to topic by stating why it is a pressing issue and supports with credible sources

16.5 point- States how the issue has personal impact but does not give a summary of local or regional issue or statement is missing specific details

5.5 point- Journal assignment contains errors of organization and grammar but errors are limited enough so that assignment can be understood
