The Introduction ➔ Hook- gets the reader’s attention (examples from “Buy Nothing

Day”) ◆ “Some people are trying to change the culture of consumerism in

North America” (Harris 18).

➔ Background- gives information on topic (like a story or statistics) ◆ “On this day, these anti-materialists congregate in shopping malls

around the country...” (18).

➔ Thesis Statement- tells what the essay will prove or demonstrate ◆ “Yet, despite the relative success of the movement, many question
