I earned my master degree in 2004 and started teaching at the college level shortly thereafter. I have been fortunate enough to work with students from a diverse array of backgrounds in both community college and university settings. I taught Statistics, Research methods, and a neuroscience course in Sensation and Perception at California State University, Long Beach (CSULB) for almost 3 years. Teaching at CSULB was a wonderful introduction to teaching higher education and a great experience. Along with our two cats, my husband, Chris, and I then moved to the Palm Beach area in south Florida in 2008 so that he could complete his medical residency. That fall, I started teaching at Palm Beach Community College, now Palm Beach State College (PBSC). During that time, I felt that to be a more effective professor, I needed more education so I decided to earn my Ph.D. I completed my Ph.D. in Behavioral Neuroscience in 2013 and spent the last 5 years teaching neuroscience courses at Florida Atlantic University. Born and raised here, although moved around a lot, I am back in my hometown. I am a mother of 2 grown sons, ages 24 and 29. I live with my elderly mother; she is a widow too, so we help each other. I became a widow at age 38 on November 5, 2011, and we were married 22 years. That was a big life changing experience and a very hard adjustment. Going from a married woman to a single woman overnight was hard. But I have made it. So, I decide that this is my time now, my kids are grown, and I was single, so I went back to school. I got my GED nowadays called HISET in July 2015. I wanted more education so enrolled in Ashford University and started February 2016. Now I am in my third year and has been a learning journey. Lots of headaches but doing it one word at a time My major is BA in Applied Behavior Science and with this degree I can work as a counselor or social worker helping people. I have some health challenges so is the reason why I choose an online college. I have Usher syndrome which causes blindness and deafness so I cannot drive. I wear a hearing aid but am in the deafness range and blind at night. But it does not stop me from enjoying life; I just go at my speed. My hobbies are arts & crafts, shopping, family times, vacations and road trips. This is a new class that I have never taken and totally all new things but sounds a lot like math. Math is not my strongest strength and I did not see a favorite because I have never done any of them. But guess data will be the favorite because you need a data on things. Looking over the overviews for each week, I do not really see any specific area of statistics in the behavioral and social sciences that is of interest to me. I just finished taking statistical math and I really did not enjoy it. I found the math to be very confusing and difficult and it took me a while to understand, but hopefully this class will be easier. I utilize various statistical methods when conducting my research to solve a problem within the work center that includes probability and percentages to calculate or predict an outcome, and I am pretty sure that there are many other reasons that I am not aware of yet. After spending years exploring the world outside of the military, I decided that I would to go back to school to expand my knowledge and see where it lands me. I selected this program because over the years, I have witness a number of things first hand, and I wanted to be able to make more of a connection from a sociology standpoint. As society, continues to change I think it is going to be important to be able to understand what is going on around us as it takes place. Part of that understanding will come from being able to effectively participate in conversations that are up for discussion. One of the areas of statistics that I found to be particular interesting to me is inferential statistics. I think it is interesting because it infers something, and I really want to learn how to effectively apply that to sociology. I currently do not have much of a view when it comes to the values of statistics in the behavioral social science area, but I hope the course can help me form an informed view. I am not currently in a field where the course content can enhance my professional perspective. I live in Owings Mills, Maryland but spent the majority of my life in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. I live with my girlfriend and two cats. We enjoy going to the gym, binge watching Netflix shows, hiking, going to the beach, and going to her parent's summer home on the Shenandoah river in West Virginia. I am currently the Program Coordinator of a Family Homeless Shelter and before that I was a Supervisor at a Residential Treatment Facility that houses children with a number of different mental health diagnoses. After I finish my undergraduate degree at Ashford, I will move on to earn my master's and PsyD. I enjoy helping people help themselves and I am excited to be able to do so in more of a clinical capacity. Positions held in human services field can be very stressful. I am consciously mindful about my self-care plan and always thinking of new ways to keep my mind off work when I am not there. In general, I am usually successful at this but running a homeless shelter and working with adults can be very exhausting. When I complete my master's degree, I will transition back to children to become a therapist until my doctorate degree is completed. I am very interested in this class, but I am also nervous. I have a goal set for myself to earn all A’s in every class that I take and my MAT232 grade was a bit too close for comfort. It certainly wasn’t due the lack of effort. Upon reflection to the weekly overviews, it appears that this class focuses on analyzing statistical data and how that data is used. I am excited for the opportunity to better understand statistics and how they are used in psychology. My step-father lives with me, and I take care of him full time. I lost my mom in January to a mistake the hospital made. It has been a rough couple of months. This is my second class since she has passed, and it helps keep my mind occupied. When I first started at Ashford, I wanted to be a substance abuse counselor, but I have since changed my mind (I’m not an addict, and I don’t think I could connect with the patients). I am not sure which way I will take my degree, but I know that statistics will I have a big part of whatever field I choose. When I seen this class as my next course, I honestly didn’t know what to expect, but after reviewing the overview pages I have a better understanding of the course goals each week. Right now, I do not have any specific areas of statistics that interest me as I don’t know all areas. But I would say I would like to learn more about the analysis of variance, statistical test used, and how to accurately process/understand research results. I am Christa and I just turned 33 years old. I am working on the last year of my Bachelors degree in Applied Behavior Science. I have lived in Connecticut my whole life but have been lucky enough to travel. I am not married nor do I have children but I do have two dogs, a Jack Russell Terrier named Jake and a Chihuahua name Princess, who are very much like my children. I also have a horse that I have had for almost 16 years. We did lots of competing in the Hunter/Jumping world, jumping over obstacles and being judged for it on form and ability, but now he, Buster Brown, is semi-retired. I love to ride in my spare time, which is rare since I work 2 jobs, one as a bartender and one as a Direct Support Staff caring for adults with developmental and physical disabilities in a day program setting. Working in the Human Services field is what motivated me to come back to school. I earned my Associates degree in General Studies with a concentration in Human Services at a local community college last May and have been continuing on with Ashford since January. I am a little nervous about taking this course just because I am not the best at math. I am much more a writer than I am a mathematician. I did take a Stats class before the last course and did ok but do not feel I fully understand it. I do think that the value of statistics in the behavioral and social sciences is important because they help to organize data to get a better understanding of what works in different social or behavioral situations. My ultimate goal is to work with Child Protective Services in some way. When I hear the word statistics it makes my brain hurt. I've never really been good with numbers but I do ok with the basics. Statistics are interesting as long as I am not the one figuring them out??. I feel that they are important for many different reasons. They allow a person to gain a perspective of the outcomes of what they are studying and allows and an understanding of a certain population. I find statistics interesting when the statistic is about a certain geographical population such as the United States or other countries such as Europes population as a whole or by genders. I feel that I get a better understanding of what the number stands for. As for statistics about behavioral and social science; I believe that the statistics are not always accurate. The sample is not always correct. Studies of behavioral and social science; I feel do not get the full understanding of the reasons of some of the outcomes. For example human behavior tends to follow a certain pattern such as developmental milestones. I reached all my milestones on time. I came from a dysfunctional broken family and was an only child for 10 years. My sister 10 years later is born into that same dysfunction and she handled and turned out better. When studing the reasoning for this outcome, I feel statistics dont take that into account when applied plus people lie making statistics not accurate. I am a mother of my nine year old daughter and a wife to a over the road truck driver. For the last few days my daughter has been acting like her life has ended without internet. My daughter asked yesterday night, "Mommy Daddy can we go to McDonald's for some internet" I couldn't help but laugh and while my husband was working on the hot water heater he needed to cut the electricity off. So the wifi had been shut off too and I was at the store getting fabric cleaner when I get a call from my daughter telling me that the wifi isn't working can I call the wifi man to come back. My major is psychology with a minor in business administration. I am interested in week 4 because of the understanding of SAT scores. I took my SAT along time ago but I am interested because although my daughter is going to the 4th grade I would still like to know any statistics and methods behind the SAT's to hopefully be able to help her in the future. I am a wife and mother to 6 children. 3 are biologically mine and 3 have blessed our home while they are with us in foster care waiting for the day to be reunited with their families. My husband and I lead a Celebrate Recovery in the panhandle of Florida. We love being able to be with people without a mask with our problems and talk with everyone. We have had an exciting year with the hurricane taking our small town out with it. I can say camping is NO WHERE in my near future after living for 3 weeks without power or running water (we have a well). Then dealing with repairs to our home as most of our trees fell during the storm and 8 months later the cleanup is still in the works. This class is going to be interesting for me. I am highly interested in behavioral statistics. I am looking forward to learning how to correctly read the statistics and understand the findings in the research. Behavioral science has always peeked an interest with me as we see many children with different forms of trauma and on medications. TOWRADS DISCUSSIONS REQUIR Danielle, Hello Class, My name is Danielle, I currently live in Eagle, Id which is right outside of Boise. I'm a single mom to 2 boys, ages 5 and 11. We really enjoy spending time together, with summertime approaching we spend lots of time outside going to the parks, hiking, swimming, or just hanging out. Both of my boys enjoy playing sports and watching sports so we stay very busy. I'm thankful to have a job that has been critical in supporting my journey to accomplish my degree, I have 12 classes left (no I'm not counting) to finish my degree in Sociology and Human Resource Management. I'm currently working in a stretch assignment supporting my company from a HR aspect and I'm loving it. I lead the Multicultural Network for my employee group and plan events and provide education as part of our Diversity and Inclusion Team, I really enjoy this and connecting with local groups to support them. My last class was Literacy Statistics which was a difficult class for me but with lots of time and hard work I passed, initially I was surprised to see another Statistics class on my schedule but after looking through this course work I'm excited to work through this class. TOWRADS DISCUSSIONS REQUIR Hi Patti, I too am in my final year, and the closer I get to my graduation date, the more excited I become, but at the same time, I find that I am getting more impatient. It seems as though time has slowed down significantly. The career that you are currently in as well as the one that you want to pursue is very commendable. I find it interested. I think it requires a lot of patience, compassion, and education, and from your post, it appears as though you have all of those traits. Being able to console family members who are dealing with this issue is a service that is needed because sometimes there is a disconnect, and family members lose patience with their parents or grandparents who are suffering from these illnesses because they are left doing more work and sometimes they are emotionally distraught. But having someone there to walk them through the process and help them to accept or navigate this direction is beneficial. I know it will make a difference in their lives. You understand where they are coming from, so you can empathize with them. Furthermore, I enjoyed your interpretation of Statistics because the example you gave shows that statistics apply to everything usually something that we are familiar with; in your case your career field and when I hear statistics I am thinking of suicide and mortality rates because they are concerns within my future profession. TOWRADS DISCUSSIONS REQUIRES Cara Allen, Hello Class, My name I Cara Allen, I'm currently living in Las Vegas NV, we moved here 11 years ago in the means to only live here a few years and we are still here. Although it's not my first choice place its change my life significantly. It's been a roller coaster ride but things are slowly falling into place. 4 years ago my life took a dramatic turn when my 100% healthy 2 year kid stuck away for over 2 to 5 minutes. While I was at work headed home like I did every work day I got the call that forever changed. At that time I was headed in a career of being an investigator and wanted to be a private investigator. The call that change that route was the one where I didnt lost my son to a common accident at his age but he survived a drowning in a pool that left him brain damaged that not only changed him but changed our whole world. watching a normal healthy kid transfer into a child with sever Cerebral Palsy was told he wouldn't make it through the night has grown to a none verbal not walking child that suffered 24 hr pain for over 2 years. As I watched him suffer and fell into a whole, I learned I wanted to help others get through the life changing event that effected everyone, including my other 2 older children. I decided to change my path and go the route if helping families with children that are returning home from the hospital. I learned a lot about medical and watched a person change into someone we never thought possible. I'm thankful everyday hes alive but I hate what opts done to everyone involved. Ivr lost a lot but gained insite ofvthings I want to learn about. I hope to take this experience with education and spread my abilities to help others understand what we went through. The meaning of statistics is very interesting, and I love figuring out things from the beginning and I enjoyed my last class if statistical literacy. It was the first time I didn’t find myself searching on the internet for answering but enjoyed reading and truly figuring out the work. It was a lot of enjoyment. I look forward to my remaining classes that leads up to my graduation next year. I'm a single mom now of a 17man, 12 daughter and my 24/7 medical care. 6-year-old little guy that lights up my days with his smiles and strength he’s gained he’s known able to smile, laugh, eating by mouth and love music and laughing kids make him so happy. He's the purpose of my returning to school to help teachers learn more about our new situation. I hope to leave large footprints leaving behind to help save lives like his. Nonprofits to help pay for swimming classes of infants. Even though I hate the change, but I appreciate what it's beginning to do now and help others.
