IC #1A. Industries and Careers (First Assignment) (Due: 1/29/18) – 3 pts: First, using Blackboard and this discussion area, create a discussion thread about the industry you may consider working in. (Put your name and the Industry in the Subject line).

Keep in mind that this may or may not be the industry you actually end up in after college. However, pick and interesting industry, because it will be the industry you will be exploring in depth and many of your assignments will focus on it in this course.  In the body of your posting, write a short paragraph or two describing what specific job you are targeting within that industry. This is the time to think big. Use this class to discover what technologies and skills you will need to be familiar with in order to achieve the ranks and position you desire. For instance, don’t just indicate that you are looking for an entry-level position, rather, post that you want to be the CIO of a 400 bed Metropolitan Hospital, or you want to be president of a company that does “insert description here”.

IC #1B. Industries and Careers (Second Assignment) (Due: Sunday, 2/4/18) – 3 pts: Secondly, using your favorite search engine (i.e., Google, Bing, etc.), find either an "article" or a "video" that describes a technology that has or will affect your selected industry and/or career you have chosen. Prepare brief “article/video summary” including citation, reason article fits the topic, and what you learned from the article. REPLY to your Initial “industry” post and post your article summary in message area. Put the article / video topic in your Subject Line. Attach the link to that article or video at the bottom of your posting. 

Note: Students may choose the same industry, but look for different videos or articles if others have already posted it.

Disruptive Technologies within Industries and Careers (Third Assignment) (Due: Sunday, 2/11/18) – 5 pts: Find article / video about “disruptive technologies” within your “industry” or a similar “industry.” Prepare brief “article summary” including citation, reason article fits the topic, and what you learned from the article / video. REPLY to your Initial “industry” and post summary in message area. Follow same instructions as for IC #1B above. Be sure to change Subject Line as appropriate.

Emerging Technology – internet of Things (IoT) within Industries and Careers (Fourth Assignment) (Due: Sunday, 2/18/18) – 5 pts: Find article/video about “IoT” within your “industry” or a similar “industry.” Prepare brief “article summary” including citation, reason article fits the topic, and what you learned from the article. IT Management – Chief Information Officers or Sr. IT Executives within Industries and Careers (Sixth Assignment) (Due: Sunday, 3/25/18) – 10 pts: Find an article about a CIO (Chief Information Officer) within a company in your “industry” or a similar “industry.” Prepare brief “article summary” including citation, reason article fits the topic, and what you learned from the article. Or ALTERNATE IC #5 (Sixth Assignment) (Due: Sunday, 3/25/18) – 10 pts: - Find the PDF about Chief Information Officers (CIOs) and executives named to Computerworld’s “100 Premier IT Leaders 2016!” This PDF is posted under BLACKBOARD / MODULES / MODULE 5 / Module 5 TO DO LIST> Select one of the winning CIOs and his or her company (from your industry or similar to your industry) to research and post a summary answering the assignment questions about the CIO. Post REPLY to your own industry discussion thread with your name and CIO name in subject as your selection. Summary about the CIO / Company:

· Why was the CIO selected? (Technologies? Practices? Innovations? etc.)

· What was the CIO’s previous career path? (Is his or her background IT or functional? Who did he or she work for? How many years in IT business? In hospitality / tourism business?

· What is the company’s competitive business strategy and how does IT support it or enable it?

IC #6. Industries and Careers Semester Report Guidelines (Seventh Assignment) (Due: 4/15/18) – 70 pts: Using the information from the articles you collected and doing some additional research to collect more information about your industry, you should first pick a disruptive technology to study and report on. Pick a technology that you are interested in learning more about.

Then you should prepare a written report which describes your industry / business, why IT in general is critical to organization or business success, and how IT is managed within the organizations or businesses in your industry. Then, you should describe the Disruptive Technology you selected, how will it impact your industry / company / organization. Finally, you should include recommendations about how your company should or should not use the technology.
