Today we will cover a technique for creating an informational abstract for your IRP—using the model from the Bokashi composting example

—Canvas file #: “032-Module-2-Wr327-W2018-IRP-1-MODEL-EXAMPLE-TEMPLATE.”

3

Follow these guidelines from the Purdue OWL: https://owl.english.purdue.edu/owl/resource/656/1/

Informational abstracts communicate contents of reports:

· Include purpose, methods, scope, results, conclusions, and recommendations

· Highlight essential points

· Are short—from a paragraph to a page or two, depending upon the length of the report (10% or less of the report)

· Allow readers to decide whether they want to read the report

Guidelines

The scope of the following Investigative Research Project (IRP) Report is limited to research activities undertaken in Wr 327 Technical Writing during winter term 2018. Activities included a four-phase methodology consisting of brainstorming among peers, web and OSU library research, and personal observation and other information exchanges.

----Include scope, purpose, methods

----This section may be used verbatim

6

The results of this activity are brought together in the report’s Discussion section, which states that Bokashi composting could be a viable method for local recycling of food wastes generated on the OSU campus. Finally, this report recommends that OSU’s Special Projects Office fund a pilot study of three complete Bokashi composting cycles using six 5-gallon Bokashi buckets—with the subsequent fermented waste trenched into multiple garden locations at the Oak Creek Center for Urban Horticulture on the OSU campus.

----Include results, conclusions, and recommendations

----Adapt this content to your IRP

7

Students with an interest in Horticulture would be paid to work on the pilot project, with the project findings (including photo documentation) published to the “Horticulture Projects” web site.

----Highlight essential points, allowing readers to decide whether they want to read the report

----Adapt this content to your IRP
