For today’s daily Vitamin, we watched a example of Video portrait of other student. What’s in the film which is cutting of cloth is similar to what am I doing which is to tear off cloth. This video gives me a better idea of the project. The moving mouth explains the background voice. And the make up of the actor is well considered. In today Daily Vitamin, I begins to think about the make up of my actress and how will the whole scene look like when my project is presented. The details in the video is well consider, instead of real leg hair, the director uses marker to draw the leg hair.

Today we watched kim sooja's art work and how does she come up with the art work. She didn't impressed me much by her art work but I love the concept behind her art. The work “to wrap” is connected with her background of living in the area of armed conflict. This is their suitcase during their period. I think her work is very powerful because she use such soft material which give me the feeling of gentle and contrast to the violent war. All of her work isn't expressed very directly. When we are watching her work, we have different interoperation because she gives us a opening ending. But overall, I think her is beautiful but not aggressive enough.

My favorite piece is Skepticitis. The beginning scene draws my attention immediately, I was guessing which part of her body is appearing on the screen, is it shoulder? The lighting of her room portrait is also well controlled, one the right side of the screen is covered by shadow. And rotate the screen 90 degrees makes the video more interesting and the position of hers looks like the Rome stature “Thinker.” The continue movement of scratching her leg is easy to memorize. At the end, the music stopped but the scratching movement still continues which emphasize this movement again.

If I could make changes in this project, I would lose some weight to look good on the screen. I would also play around with the lighting more. I would begin the screen with dark and a bit of light on my mouth. I would try to create a signature movement in the video for people to easily memorize the portrait.

Sleeping in fever, I am unfair

to know just who you are:

hung up like a pig on exhibit,

the delicate wrists,

the beard drooling blood and vinegar;

hooked to your own weight,

jolting toward death under your nameplate.

The poet talk about the image of how Jesus been hung on the Criss crosse in the feverish dream of unbeliever. The language she use is very aggressive which I felt the same when I was watching the video. In the beginning of the film, there are people coming to the beach which I thought was a group of friend hanging out together. And the scene become aggressive. I like how the director shot from bottom when the people left one of the person up in the sky. It make me to get a better feeling of the pressure and the heaviness of a person. The background music and the changing of the scene make me feel anxiety. The director choose the beach which is heaven or hell depend on our interoperation. Sea can drown us and also to have fun.

04/05/19 John Cornell’s At night by torch and spear is a film thats is a collection of edited film. There are many industry element involves in the film. The way how John Cornell edited the film is fresh. There are some scene started to shot from the bottom to the top or reverse the camera. The whole tone of the film is aggressive, and I believe John Cornell is trying to recall the Industry age. The scene in the movie with the background music didn't make me feel positive at all. This film was taken during the WWII. Some of the scene transfer so fast which reminds me of some kind of fantasy.

We watched the outer space which is about a woman collapsing and decreasing from some kind of special effect. I remember there is a scene where the black dots is leaving the image and woman face is getting clearer. I like how the director begin the film with the black dot cover and slower move to the face. And also faces popping out from different perspective. The director controls the tempo of the film every well. The director gives the audience a visual break before visual fatigue occurs.

For today, we have a visited artist coming to introduce us to her work. Her work is extremely bold and sometimes evenly uncomfortable watching her work. However, I enjoyed it. The video was very impressive of she pretending to be a plant and calling out to the world of she is a plant. This video to me is more like a discovering herself video and questioning the nature is she a plant. The other video of she and some other artist dress up and in the nature is also new to me. She got her own style which I have never seen before. The way she expressive herself through art is bold and wild. Her work is loud and aggressive which easily capture people’s attention.

Today, we watched Harry Harris video which produces by him. After watching some of his work, I found out that he enjoys to play the tempo and the angle of film. Most the work of his have a quick edited and fast speed. I enjoys watching the dancing video the most. In this video, the speed goes fast and then claim down. While, the speed changes, the angle changes, from the smooth and tracking shot to close-up and details shot. The beginning and the end of the video is the most attractive. At the beginning, the camera follows the actress in circle. The image provided by this angle is extremely beautiful. And at the end, the details of body part giving small motion is also fascinating.

We watched stan brakhage’s film and I like the idea of removing the sound for the audience to focus more on the image instead of disturb by the audio in his “Cat’s candle.” He united the tone by making the image based on reddish color such as red, pink and purple. For his work “The star are beautiful,” what I have expect is the star in the sky. But instead, he make a point of “if no-one is looking at the star, it is ethereally dark” which explains the image of he is filming. Most of the image doesn't connect with the audio which I believe he did it purposely. I find in this way, it is more interesting, if he film the star and the sun which will make this film a scientific film.

Most effective: I like abbi's video the most. I think she is very smart by replacing the audio by subtitle. And the subtitle work with the image because it wiggles. And also, her video reminds me of documentary form of film in 90s. I like the filter she use which united the tone of the whole video. Her editing skill was great, she connects each footage fluently. And I also like how she mostly film the landscape instead of people because if she film people for the majority, it won’t work with the subtitle.

Least effective: “The laughing Heart,” The reason I think this is the least effective piece because there isn't a scene bring the climax. She blend the footage very well by using gradual change but she uses gradual change for every transparent of the footage which I think it make the film less interesting. I suggest her to attempt to make bold changes, will make the film better. Also, she edited each footage almost the same length which is one of the reason why the film is less interesting.

Allison Schulnik’s pieces is avant-grade. Her work reminds me of the cartoon I watched when I was small. The character she create definitely has her own style and most of the character provides me the feeling of dark fairy tale. Although she uses a lot of white both on her character and her background but I don't feel purity or innocent in her film. However, I don't feel negative while I was watching the film. And the movement design connect to the dance performance. I was impressive by her skill or moving the clay frame by frame. I think what make Allison so special due to she is getting over the traditional way to film and experiencing filming in her own way.

We watched film made by Chris Marker. The whole video is made of photos instead of footage. No special effect during the video but only black and whit footage. The director makes his voice during the video by showing micro expression. The director uses photo instead of video footage for thr film because I believed that when people refresh to old memory, the image come out like a power point. I believed also the director is implying to us that it is hard for us to go back and make changes. And in this way, the director successfully imply the audience. The director keeps repeating the word which insists us some of the image we see is a mistake or not “real.”

Today we watched William Kentridge’s film and the process of how he work. From my impression, animation is either digital or 3D film by puppet. But for William, he mostly work with choke surprised me and how he works very traditionally instead of digitally. However, I think it is the choke that brings emotion to his film. In the film we watched, I felt a feeling of the artist is repress his sadness. There isn't a way for the artist to release his pain she repress the pain and until it reaches a point which explode. I like his color choice which is simple but effective. And also, I think the scene of the man and a woman are sharing telescope and the man sees his country through the telescope. I think it is a smart idea to show how the woman changes his consciousness.
