Final Paper Guidelines – 2019 Spring

1. You can pick-up your own topics. It is preferred to choose some issues which are related to

our class. But you can choose a topic of your interest. Your project can be either a literature

review or a research proposal.

2. Your final should include the following parts,

 Introduction (or Outline)

 Motivation (or Background)

 Research Design or Methodology

 Results (if you have) or Data and Discussions

 Summary (or Conclusions)

 Citations (references, including web citation)

3. Your final project is the 6-page (double-space) paper or literature review. The style of

citations can be APA, MLA, the Chicago Manual, ASA, Harvard Referencing and Vancouver

reference style (for details, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Citation). It is due on May 3rd, 2019 by

noon. You can submit your paper on Blackboard.

4. What is a literature review?

A literature review is a type of review article. A literature review is a scholarly paper, which

includes the current knowledge including substantive findings, as well as theoretical and

methodological contributions to a particular topic.

Literature reviews are secondary sources, and do not report new or original experimental work.

Most often associated with academic-oriented literature, such reviews are found in academic

journals, and are not to be confused with book reviews that may also appear in the same

publication. Literature reviews are a basis for research in nearly every academic field.

A narrow-scope literature review may be included as part of a peer-reviewed journal article

presenting new research, serving to situate the current study within the body of the relevant

literature and to provide context for the reader. In such a case, the review usually precedes the

methodology and results sections of the work.

5. What is a research proposal?

A research proposal is a document proposing a research project, generally in the sciences or

academia, and generally constitutes a request for sponsorship of that research. Proposals are

evaluated on the cost and potential impact of the proposed research, and on the soundness of the

proposed plan for carrying it out. Research proposals generally address several key points:

 What research question(s) will be addressed, and how they will be addressed

 How much time and expense will be required for the research?

 What prior research has been done on the topic?

 How the results of the research will be evaluated?

 How the research will benefit the sponsoring organization and other parties?
