Response Papers
- Each response paper covers texts of 3-4 modules, including the one it is assigned on. - Each response paper is followed a terminology quiz, held in class on the following week. - The quiz checks your understanding of the key terminology. - Refresh your memory of the texts cover by the response paper and of the key terms,
outlined in the corresponding handout.
Description Response paper is a short opinion essay, which is different from summary. The essay should be written in argumentative (evidence based) analytical and not descriptive way. Your essay should include:
- Outline of the main ideas that you have learned from the texts. What is important about them?
- Examples (from the readings or from your own experience) to these ideas. - Comparison of the texts. How are they related to each other? Do they complement,
contradict or unrelated to each other? What are some points that repeat in several texts?
Essay writing tips Start with an opening paragraph, where you describe in general terms the main topics discussed in the texts. Formulate one most interesting question from the readings.
In the body text expand on 3-4 points from (all) the texts in a greater detail: bring examples, explain why you think these points are important, and make comparisons. Dedicate one paragraph to each point.
Concluding with a summary, in which you outline your learning outcomes from these readings. You may add ideas of how you will implement this knowledge in your research or practice.
Citation: Please use MLS guidelines to properly cite the articles:
- In the paper’s title: full bibliographic citation of the analyzed texts - In-text citation: after a quote or when rephrasing a point made in one of the readings with
your own words, insert - (Author: page number) - Quotes: very beneficial in papers! Make sure to put quotation marks and to reference
them in either in-text citation or footnote
