White Paper Structure
Your white paper (business proposal) is an argument and should be written in memo format, addressed to a manager of your business (not to me).
To: Name, Position, Name of Business
From: Your Name, University Student
Date:
Subject: Main idea of your Recommendation (clear but brief)
Summary: (bold)
Identify problem, issue, or need of your business.
Mention solution your proposal will recommend (clear and succinct).
Problem and Background:
Fully discuss the problem, issue, or need you see in your business. Remember, this is the first part of your argument; the business will not implement your recommendation unless you first convince them they have a need.
Recommendation:
This is the heart of your paper. Fully explain your solution to the problem you have identified above.
Evidence:
Provide relevant substantive, credible scholarly support for your proposal / recommendation: Sources from the university databases, examples from other businesses, your own experience. Document all direct quotes (and graphics) using APA format; provide a References page at the end to show your sources.
Graphic:
Provide a visual representative of the evidence provided above. You may construct your own graph, chart, or table, or you may copy and paste one from a relevant source you find in the databases (e.g. from the Annual Report of a similar business – just one example). Document graphic in APA format.
Evaluation:
Your final argument to the business about how your idea will improve the business, i.e. your “last sales pitch.” Make your last words to the company your most convincing.
