Scientists consider the plate tectonic theory as a "unifying theory because it can explain many geologic phenomena in the world. Plate tectonics defines as a lithospheric crustal movement or continental drifting of different plates. These plates move in order to make earthquakes, volcanoes, and even new continents.

Plate tectonic theory is the point of convergence that explains earth’s geological processes. From the origin of an earthquake, location of a volcano, to the creation of mountains, the shape and location of continents. In other words, plate tectonic theory is the framework where theories such as continental drift, and seafloor spreading can explain the changes that led to the current situation of the planet earth.

Hey Kevin! I liked how you use "earth's geological processes" instead of phenomena like I did. It gave me a new way of looking at the unifying theory. Hi Kevin,
Great how you used the term convergent boundary as there are three kinds of boundaries, convergent, divergent and transform. Convergent boundaries are sites where plates collide. Great job on your post!

It is very informative how you included the reason we can explain earthquakes, volcanoes, and the location of continents is because of this theory. Without it we would not know why the Earth is the way it is and how all the phenomenons on its crust came to be.

The earth is divided into three layers, the crust, the mantle and the core. A tectonic plate is composed of both the crust and the upper part of the mantle. They form a rigid slab of lithosphere. These plates move in the upper most , mantle, the athenosphere which flow slowly. Tectonic plates move around and cause mountain belts, volcanoes, shorelines and earthquakes to form where the plates interact with their boundaries. Geologists refer to plate tectonics as the unifying theory because it defines the lithospheric movements of various plates and their boundaries.

Hi, okay now that makes a better sense of how this theory is amazing but also difficult to provide a concept of how the earth works with so many factors as with earth layers. It sure did take a very long time to move lands away from miles aways with floor spreading etc.

The plate tectonic theory is considered as a unifying theory by scientists because it explains earth's geological processes such as the formation of mountains, volcanoes, earthquakes and more. When the crust shifts, there will most likely be some sort of reaction. The plate tectonic theory is basically like the source or the answer to these occurrences which is why it is termed "unifying".

I believe that the theory of the plate tectonics is a unifying theory because of a lack of information to its theory to fully understand. Thanks to the sensor and other technology we have a better sense of understanding of the moment of the earth's ground movement that was no available back in the days in the early 20th century. That forces and electromagnetic field as a part of the shape of earth crust and land.

Great response! Agree that plate tectonic theory helps to unify seemingly unrelated geographic ideas. Also, I really like the point you made about how gradual shifts in the arrangement of tectonic plates add up over time to create huge impacts – including hazards like tsunamis, as you mentioned. I really like the part in your answer where you state how the theory is able to explained 4.5 billion years of Earths history, making it the Earth we know today. I like this since it really made me think that the Earth is constantly changing and evolving, and if we live long enough, we might be able to notice some of these subtle changes. Plate tectonics is considered to be a unifying theory because it provides a cohesive, “big-picture” explanation for seemingly- disparate geologic phenomena – beginning with Alfred Wegener’s original concept of continental drift. Wegener began with the notion that today’s continents look as though they may all have fit together at one point, and introduced the concept of Pangea (Marshak, 35). He then went on to gather supporting evidence from several sources, including the fossil record, glacial striations, and paleoclimate zones – but that’s where his work stopped. Holmes’ proposition of mantle convection and Robert Dietz + Harry Hess’ theory of seafloor spreading (Marshak, 36) helped to further flesh out and verify Wegener’s work, introducing the concept of tectonic plates as a way to explain earthquakes, volcanoes, mountain-building and other phenomena associated with the movement of continents and the ocean floor.

the mantle makes a shell, and this shell has large cracks in it, which separate the shell into pieces. These pieces are known as plates. These plates move, and at times have negative consequences. The movement of these plates is where we get the theory of plate tectonics. The movement of these plates can cause volcanos and mountain ranges to form, as well as earthquakes.
In chapter 2 of Essentials of Geology, page 36, it states that the reason scientists consider the plate tectonic theory as a unifying theory is because tekton in Greek means "builder", and these plates when in movement, have the ability to build geologically on Earth. The plate tectonic theory is the theory that the Earth's lithosphere is divided into plates that move around. Scientists consider the plate tectonic theory to be a "unifying theory" because it simply supports the idea that everything in the lithosphere is interdependent. This meaning that all the volcanoes that rise, earthquakes that occur, and the ocean basins are all working together. When the plates move, it always causes a reaction.

Plate tectonics is considered a unifying theory because it defines the geological processes of earth and how it changed due to the history of drifting continents. The theory was formed after geologists unified all various data from past observations on the movement of the plates of the earth and gave a mechanism for how the plates moved around. In the article "Plate Tectonics" by National Geographic it states,"The theory of plate tectonics states that the Earth’s solid outer crust, the lithosphere, is separated into plates that move over the asthenosphere, the molten upper portion of the mantle. Oceanic and continental plates come together, spread apart, and interact at boundaries all over the planet"( National Geo. 1). Plate tectonics is the combination of all earth science concepts that came before it and describes a large amount of information on the origin of ocean basis, shifting positions of the continents, volcanoes, earthquakes, and mountain ranges.

Scientists consider the plate tectonic theory a unifying theory because it allowed us to understand features on Earth's surface. Before this theory existed, scientists believed phenomenons such as mountain ranges occurred through vertical movement. Continental drift showed us that Earth's processes move plates in horizontal distances. Mountain ranges, volcanoes, earthquakes, etc form where moving plates interact at their boundaries. According to Satellite Applications for Geoscience Education, "The theory states that Earth’s lithosphere is broken into numerous slabs or plates which are in constant motion driven by heat flow from within the Earth’s interior (mantle and core)." It essentially interprets the lithospheric crustal movements/continental drifting.

According to the textbook, plate tectonics is considered as the "unifying theory" because it explains certain geologic phenomenons that otherwise have no other explanations, such as continental drift. For example, the same precambrian rock assemblages found on the eastern coast of South America were also found on the western coast of Africa. This led for scientist to theorize that the continents could have once all been connected somehow. No other explanation other than the plate tectonics theory gave scientist enough evidence on why and how continents could have shifted from the supercontinent that once existed.

Scientists consider the plate tectonic theory as a "unifying theory" because plate tectonics has revolutionized the way we view large features on the surface of the Earth. According to "Plate Tectonics—The Unifying Theory of Geology," Earth’s internal processes were previously thought to operate in a vertical fashion, with continents, oceans, and mountain ranges bobbing up and down, without much sideways movement. Therefore, it is defined as that because of the movement that involves plates and then consists of major causes such as earthquakes and other natural eruptions.

Scientists consider the plate tectonics theory as a “unifying theory” because it provides an overarching idea that explains and is the source of us being able to explain many other geological ideas and processes. Through plate tectonics, we are able to identify what the Earth looked like before (through Alfred Wegener and his theory on Pangaea). We are also able to identify different boundaries (divergent, convergent, and transform) that help us predict geological processes such as the location of land masses in the future, formation of volcanoes, epicenters of earthquakes, formation of mountain ranges, faults, and much more. Not only that, but with this information, it can help by providing safety measures for the people too. Being an overarching theory is what makes the plate tectonics theory the “unifying theory” of geology.

I see scientists considering the plate tectonic theory to be a "unifying theory" as the former states that the Earth is made up of various different lithospheric plates, which ultimately come together to become responsible for major events that occur around the world, such as volcanic activity and earthquakes, which serves as a sort of quintessential theory for geology in general.

I agree that the plate tectonic theory is a unifying theory in that the theory gives an overall explanation to so much we even covered in this class. All the rock types we studied are a result of the plates creating volcanoes and other processes. On top of that, it explains the physical history and future of the Earth by allowing us to predict what the Earth will be like and how mountain ranges, volcanoes, shores, and etc. were formed. The first article you sent goes into great detail on identifying different plates which is a perfect tool to give us an outlook on the Earth’s physical properties which can later be used to dive deeper into more specific topics.

Scientists used to think that the earth would bob up and down, but now they have more proof and images of the earth moving more side to side. The unifying theory has to do with continental drift and tectonic plates underneath the earth's surface. The unifying theory ties in all the aspects of tectonic plates like earthquake activity, convergent, divergent and transform. All these aspects tie in the theory of how the earth and its continents keep drifting from one another and how earthquakes come into play. It also has to do with the locations on the earth and the kind of activity you can find there.

Plate tectonic theory is the theory that the earth's lithosphere is broken into large plates that move away from each other, then rejoin. This is seen as a unifying theory due to the fact that it together seemingly unrelated geographic occurrences (such as earthquakes and ocean floor plates).
