Materials Wash Bottle

Balloon

EXPERIMENT 3: UNDERSTANDING LUNG MECHANICS The diaphragm plays a critical role in breathing. It alters the relative pressure and forces lungs to expand or contract by changing the volume of the intrapleural space. You will demonstrate this action in this experiment.

PROCEDURE

1. Attach the balloon to the end of the straw nside of the wash bottle and secure it with a rubber band. The balloon will act as

the lung.

Note: If your wash bottle does not have a straw, remove the top of the bottle. Place the bulb of the balloon

within the wash bottle, while keeping the mouth of the balloon outside of the wash bottle. Then, attach the

mouth of the balloon to the top of the wash bottle, such that bulb of the balloon is hanging upside-down in-

side of the wash bottle.

2. Make sure the top of the bottle is secured tightly.

3. Squeeze the bottle, and record what happens to the balloon in Table 2.

4. Release the bottle, and observe what happens in Table 2.
