Guan Yu –– a Chinese military general whose martial prowess was so great that, after his death, he was defined as a god. In modern time, he is revered for his bravery and loyalty. He was also become a popular figure in historical fiction, movies and video games.
Here is a picture of a statue that is now sitting in the park at the Jingzhou city in the Hubei province of China. It stands at 48m and weighs in at 1320-tons. And it has been placed on a 10m pedestal.
Yunchang Guan, also known as Guanyu and Guangong was a military general serving under the warlord Liu Bei during the late Eastern Han dynasty of China. He was born in Hedong Commandery around 160 CE(Common era) during the end of the Han dynasty. He was one of the primary generals in Liu’s military. After the “Battle of Red Cliffs”, Guan helped Liu achieved many victories. And he was decapitated after deny serving in Sun Quan’s team. Throughout his life, beyond all questions, he was and still is famous for many of his brave combat. His accomplishments and traits have great influences in Chinese society today. And in modern time , he is revered for his bravery and loyalty. He has also become a popular figure in historical fiction, movies and video games.
Here is an example “Guanyu” is being used as a character in a mobile game.
So when we go and search Guan Yu. We normally we will see him appear wearing a green robe over his body armour and horse near him.

At Guan’s early life, he escaped from his hometown to Zhuo Commandery涿郡 after he murdered someone. In 184 CE, Liu Bei organized a militia by the supporters from the village to help defend the village from the yellow turban. Guan and Zhang Fei became part of the team and began flighting together with Liu Bei. Soon after they developed a brotherhood between three of them. They treated each other as brothers and never deny any orders Liu gives during the combat.

He was a military general serving in warlord Liu Bei’s team. Cao Cao had a higher ranking than Liu, so he was able to give orders to Guan. But in Guan’s mind, he still wanted to follow Liu’s order instead of Cao’s because of his loyalty to Liu.

When Guan was captured, Cao Cao order him to stayed in the same room with Liu Bei’s wife. To Cao Cao’s surprise, Guan did not do anything betray Liu Bei. Instead, he decided to stay outside of the room and spend the whole night reading books.

When he was captured by Sun Quan, even facing death threats, he denied serving for him because he was loyal to his own military.

After Liu Bei gained control of Yi Province in 214, Guan Yu remained in Jing Province to govern and defend the area for about seven years. In 219, while he was away fighting Cao Cao's forces at the Battle of Fancheng, Liu Bei's ally Sun Quan broke the Sun–Liu alliance and sent his general Lü Meng to conquer Liu Bei's territories in Jing Province. By the time Guan Yu found out about the loss of Jing Province after his defeat at Fancheng, it was too late.
Along with Zhang Fei, he shared a brotherly relationship with Liu Bei and accompanied him on most of his early exploits. Guan Yu played a significant role in the events leading up to the end of the Han dynasty and the establishment of Liu Bei’s state of Shu Han during the Three Kingdoms period. While his loyalty towards Liu Bei is honored, he is also known for repaying Cao Cao's kindness by slaying Yan Liang, a general under Cao Cao's rival Yuan Shao, at the Battle of Boma. After Liu Bei gained control of Yi Province in 214, Guan Yu remained in Jing Province to govern and defend the area for about seven years. In 219, while he was away fighting Cao Cao's forces at the Battle of Fancheng, Liu Bei's ally Sun Quan broke the Sun–Liu alliance and sent his general Lü Meng to conquer Liu Bei's territories in Jing Province. Guan’s impact on other’s life
After his death, he was deified and named “Guangong” by the people. Many imperial dynasties in the past had commendations about Guan. He was nominated as the Sage of Military by the Qing Dynasty. This is being said that his nomination is the same level as the Sage of Literature––Confucius.
His story and his character was used in opera, drama, movies, and literature books including textbooks.

In the Romance of the Three Kingdoms, he was nominated as one of the five remarkable generals by an ancient state named Shu.
Guan also become a Chinese folk religion in Asia and outside Asia.
In China, during the late 20th century to the early 21st century, many criminal syndicates who declared themselves as gangsters, most of them had a belief in Guan because Guan was a representation of loyal, faithful, righteous and brave to them.

Until today, it is easy to find business having a spiritual plaque of Guan.
One reason is because many believe that Guan can bring fortune and safety to their business.

Here are two examples of Guan being used as a tattoo subject.
As a Chinese, I heard many people believe that Guan is the symbol of bravery. And if Guan is being tattooed on their body, they be safe and brave when they are outside. I think this can be also explained by some Christian carrying the cross with them and some Buddhist carrying Buddha beads with them.
In Taiwan, Guan Yu is known as the Taiwanese believers’ benefactor, that also is, the meaning of the savior. Which represents the importance of gguan to the local people.
In Southeast Asia, including Vietnam, Malaysia, Thailand and etc, there are numbers of Temple to worship Guan, they are called “Temple of Lord Guan”(关帝庙).

Cultural religion: influence in Taoism and Buddhism
Taoism name him “Guan Sheng Di Jun” (关圣帝君), one of the four guardians in Taoist myth.
In Chinese Buddhism, Guan is revered by most practising Buddhists as Sangharama Bodhisattva. Over time and as an act of syncretism. Guan was seen as the representative guardian of the temple and the garden in which it stands.
