Describe the activity in detail and explain how it will be used with the students:
The activity will involve a strategy to develop the breadth and the depth of the vocabulary used by the students. The activity will involve the use of graphic organizers and visual displays that will highlight the relationship that exist between different words. Based on observing the developed word cloud, the students will come up with suggestions on the likely content area being covered. Further, students will also be expected to explain how the words function together and to explain the reason for the chosen design.
List literacy and content area standards met by this activity:
The content area covered is CI.6.1: understanding the roles and the expectations from citizens globally and application of the knowledge to the role they play as members of their communities, states and nations.
The literacy area covered by this text are L.6.1, Demonstration of command of the conventions of Standard English and grammar usage in reading and writing. RI.6.4 Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative, connotative, and technical meanings.

Activity #2

Describe the activity in detail and explain how it will be used with the students:
Students will employ the use of online dictionaries so as to establish the meaning of words that they may not comprehend while reading. The students will be engaged in reading portion of the books. All vocabularies will be noted down as well as the accompanying meaning either from an online dictionary or from a reference tool on the browser. Based on their explanation of the vocabulary, the student should be able to identify the central idea communicated within the text and to explain it.
List literacy and content area standards met by this activity:
The content area covered is H.6.1, providing an explanation of the characteristics and the development of cultures.
The literacy standard that is met by this activity are RI 6.2 which is the determination of central ideas within a text and conveying them. Further, provision of a summary of the text independent from personal opinions. RI.6.4 Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative, connotative, and technical meanings.

Describe the activity in detail and explain how it will be used with the students:
The students will be expected to represent the vocabularies through different modes. Students will develop the meaning of different vocabularies through reading a definition, listening to the word or as a result of their personal connection with it and create a caption. The caption will offer the definition of the word as the student understood it. The tools that will be used will be media tools such as viewing graphics, listening to words, creating captions and completing interactive word maps.

The content area covered in this text is H.6.1 explaining the characteristics and the development of culture.
The literacy area that is covered in this activity are SL.6.2, interpretation of information presented using different media formats and coming up with explanations as to its contribution to a topic. RI.6.4 Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative, connotative, and technical meanings.
