   And read:  Philip Ziegler, The Black Death (Harper & Row, 1969); Read Chapter 1, “Origins and Nature;” and Chapter 3 on Italy.

   Then discuss: Ziegler describes the history of plague known as the Black Death. What was the Black Death?  Why is it difficult for historians to understand the Great Plague?  Using examples from one of his chapters, discuss how Europeans reacted to the plague and what impact it had on their society.  Compare this story to that told in the film.
