Step 1:
Study the articles presented on the two websites below. Notice how the perspective of the authors, the National Wildlife Federation and BP United States, impacts the information presented.
National Wildlife Federation. (2016). How does the BP oil spill impact wildlife and habitat. Retrieved from http://www.nwf.org/What-We-Do/Protect-Habitat/Gulf-Restoration/Oil-Spill/Effects-on-Wildlife.aspx
BP United States. (2016) Gulf of environmental restoration. Retrieved fromhttp://www.bp.com/en_us/bp-us/commitment-to-the-gulf-of-mexico/gulf-environmental-restoration.html
Choose one of the two articles to focus on for your rhetorical analysis essay.
Step 2:
Write a rough draft of your essay that is at least 500 words in length, following the guidelines below:
- In the introduction, identify the topic of the article you have chosen and explain why it is controversial. Provide a short summary of the article. Write a thesis statement at the end of your introduction in which you share why you think the article is ineffective. Use this APA Citation Helper for assistance in correctly citing the article.
- In three body paragraphs, analyze what is wrong with the article in terms of the credibility of the author, the logic of the argument, and how the author manipulates the reader’s emotions.
- Discuss the author’s credibility. Note how the organization’s focus influences what is presented in the article. Does the author (organization or corporate sponsor) benefit if readers believe what he or she says?
- Discuss the logic of the argument. Explain whether the evidence used actually proves the point the author is trying to make. How does the official purpose of the website impact the information it contains?
- Discuss the author’s appeal to the reader’s emotions. Do readers feel manipulated by emotion, or are their feelings engaged appropriately?
- Draw conclusions about the believability of the article overall. In your concluding paragraph, present your final assessment of the article. Share the conclusions you reached through the analysis that you engaged in the body of your essay. Note whether you think the article is reputable.
