examples of how the answer should be;

Company XYZ is currently at the elaboration stage of the lifecycle process.  At this stage, organization experience a need revitalization of their operations in order to maintain their continued success.  Company XYZ is currently experiencing a significant issue trying to implement an implementation a successful revitalization strategy.   Company XYZ is currently experiencing all the major symptoms of an organization in need of revitalization: temporary decline, the shift out of alignment with the environment, slow movement and over bureaucratization (Daft & Armstrong, 2009, p. 305).  Since the merger in 2004, Company XYZ has continued to move slowly and is in serious need of innovation to compete with the younger, low-cost focused organizations such as Wal-Mart and Target, who have risen more than 30% and 24% respectively (New York Times, 2010).

Both Company XYZ and MergeOrg were characterized as being over-bureaucratized prior to the merger and the merger, initiated by the CEO, was a way to revitalize them in order to break the trend of ongoing decline in the organization (L. Daft, 2007, p. 329).  The CEO has been harshly criticized for not knowing how to run a retail business effectively (Business Insider, 2009).  Many investors had confidence in the CEO, hoping that he would dramatically change the organization through expansion and invest in better opportunities (Business Insider, 2009), but were their expectations too high?  Instead of doing this, the CEO is blamed for running the business on a day-to-day basis, squeezing as much money as possible from stock buybacks instead of rebuilding his organization (CNN Money, 2011).  He is also being accused of not hiring a COO that has experience in the retail industry (Business Insider, 2009) managers from within the organization than from the outside (COMPANY XYZ UPDATE Case note, 2011).  In 2011, COMPANY XYZ introduced its new CEO, Lou D´Ambrosio who does not have any experience in how to run a retailer (CNN Money, 2011).  Before D´Ambrosio, an interim CEO had been running the company for more than 18 months (Business Insider, 2009).  This is a clear indicator of ineffective management.

Since Company XYZ is still having problems, the merger does not seem to have been enough to get the organization back on track.  Company’s XYZ struggles with growth can be described by over-bureaucratization and a crisis in leadership.

The above example is lacking evidence since this issue was mentioned in the analysis of the report and evidence was provided to explain the degree of bureaucracy at Company XYZ and MergeOrg.   The problem definition further elaborates upon this issue.

Another Example

BB prides itself on creating innovative products and seeking out opportunities to be increasingly innovative.  They hold innovation in high regard amongst their top four pillars. With innovation come risks. The introduction of their C-series aircraft, that promises to introduce a new streamline design, has brought those risks to the forefront and demonstrates that BB is having trouble being innovative. The inability to follow through with innovation stems from their higher degree of organizational complexity and a low level of specialization compared to its competitors.  While BB’s main competitors specialize in aircraft design and manufacturing, BB has both an aerospace and a transportation division.  This lack of specialization and complexity has resulted in lagging innovation and an inability to meet supply requirement deadlines in order for manufacturing, thus causing the launch of the new a new series of aircraft to be set back. Furthermore, aerospace division requires heavy financial investment to produce new and innovative products.  The resources to do so are spread thin due to BB having such a large and complex organization, which does not concentrate on one set of expertise.
