Answer one of the following questions:

    1. At times, scholars have interpreted Utopia as a dystopia (the opposite of a perfect society; a nightmarish depiction of a community, culture, or world). At other times, they have considered it a utopian work, as the title suggests. Which do you think it is? Or is it something in between—a combination of both?

  1. At the time Shakespeare wrote The Tempest, whites throughout Western Europe and its colonies profited enormously from the slave trade and slave labor. Examine the relationships among Ariel, Caliban, and Prospero. How does The Tempest comment on the institution of slavery? A key passage to consider is when Caliban seeks a new master in the character of Stephano.

Remember that your claims in all parts of the assignment should be substantiated by excerpts from appropriate sources (scholarly research and/or literary texts). Quotes, paraphrases, and summaries used in the assignment should be arranged according to APA rules of style, and in-text and reference citations should be provided, also formatted in APA style. Quoted material should not exceed 25% of the post.

In-text Citations for Plays

This week, when you quote The Tempest, remember that you must use a backslash to show line breaks. Additionally, in the in-text citations you must provide the author’s name and, in the following order, the numbers of the act, scene, and lines. Here is an example of an in-text citation for a quote from Hamlet, a play by Shakespeare:

"Do not for ever with thy vailed lids / seeks for they noble father in the dust: / thou know'st 'tis common; all that lives must die..." (Shakespeare, trans. 1992, 1.2.70-72).
