Professor Atran argues that one cannot negotiate a sacred value. First, describe in your own words: what are the four features of sacred values that he discussesSecond, according to Professor Atran, how does religion contribute to the creation of solidarity and a capacity for collective (cooperative) action among large numbers of people? Third, he asks what one can do when people are “locked into battle over sacred values.” What is one of his suggestions and why does he think it would help or it would not help? Is his explanation convincing to you? Why or why not? Be sure to consider what he said about the features of sacred values and how religion creates group solidarity. Be sure to listen to the entire podcast up to the Question and Answer part (58 min, 22 seconds) before answering all of the above. Be sure to use specific details from the talk to illustrate your point, and give approximate times in parentheses as references to what you are describing or analyzing.
