Worth 25% of my grade
Hello everyone. I hope that all of you had a great Thanksgiving. I can't believe that the semester is so close to being over! This is your final, your last paper of the semester! It will be worth the final 25% of your overall grade. I hope that you enjoyed the last film you watched (it was weird, wasn't it?). This paper will be based on it. Using Room 237 as your guide (and using the book as well), I want you to title your paper:
"The Untrustworthiness of Documentary Film (i.e. how reality is oftentimes fictionalized), and the Trustworthiness of Film (i.e. how fiction is oftentimes the realist version of our lives)"
That's the whole title. You need to use the entire title for your papers. Use all of the documentary films we have watched this semester to help you make sense of the title, and use them to help argue your points. Room 237 makes it very clear that there are people out there who take fictionalized films (in this case, The Shining) and come up with ways of making sense of their (really, really strange) worlds (that are real worlds, of course, coming from fictional places, the movie). Those people then inspire a real documentary that at times seems as if it's the most sensational and fakest thing in the world. So these two things, fiction and reality, become different versions of the same thing. So use other films to help you as well--that is, films that are fictional but are also the closest things to reality that you can find. Argue your points however you want, but use films to help you. I want you to be creative here--come up with arguments that fit into the title, but use the title liberally.
These papers must be at 3-5 pages in length, double-spaced, Times New Roman 12 pt. font, 1" margins all around. They will be due Monday, December 7 by 11:59 p.m. No late papers will be accepted.
Good luck!
