Many times in literature, the first line is critical to the unfolding themes and ideas within the text. Critics have seen this especially true with Hamlet's opening line, "Who's there?" Describe at least one way that you see this line contributing to a theme in the text. Be specific and use specific examples.

Read Hamlet's first soliloquy carefully (Act 1, scene 2). What is it that is really bothering him about what has happened since his father's death? How would you describe the tone of his feelings detached, impassioned, rational, ironic, or?

What evidence in the text is there to support that the ghost is either good or evil? Should the ghost be taken literally to support Hamlet's sanity, or as a figment of his imagination (which would suggest he may not be a fully trustworthy hero).
