As the largest third-party payer in the United States, CMS (Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services) has a broad, often unspoken influence over many aspects of a health care organization’s decisions and daily activities. In addition, there are external forces that affect the operations of health care organizations such as accreditors, managed care organizations, and so on.

• Using the library to support your thoughts, write a memo of 400–600 words to the organization’s leaders explaining CMS’s influence on the organization.
  • Give examples. Examples should include how a decision to pick an electronic medical record (EMR) for use in the facility and how much to charge for a service might be influenced by CMS.
• Identify at least 1 external force and how you believe it influences decisions at health care facilities.
• How do the government agencies and external forces affect the financial operations of the organization?
