Discussion: Substance Abuse and Domestic Violence

Because of the complex nature of issues like substance abuse, family violence, infidelity, separation, and divorce, professional counselors with expertise in working with couples and families need specialized knowledge and skills to address them. These issues need to be addressed at all levels of the family system—the individual within the family, various “units” within the family, and the family system itself. If neglected, the impact of these issues can be felt across generational lines and can result in lasting patterns of problematic or dysfunctional behavior.

This week, you examine the impact that issues such as substance abuse, family violence, infidelity, separation, and divorce can have on individual family members and family units within a family system. As a result of this examination, you will develop a framework for intervention using empirically supported treatments and evidence-based practices.

Post by Day 3 a brief description of one issue related to substance abuse that affects couples and families and describe one evidence-based intervention you might use in this situation. Explain one issue related to domestic violence affecting couples or families and describe one evidence-based intervention you might use.

Justify why you would use of each of your interventions.
