The global issue that I have chosen to be my final paper is adult illiteracy. This is important to me based on my job. I see so many young adults come into Job Corps who do not posses literacy skills needed to be employable. I want to learn what I need to do to better help them. The research that I have come across has a lot of good information to better assist the students. The biggest thing I have learned is involvement. Involvement between the students and teacher, as well as from the support systems. This issues impacts low income, poverty rural areas.

No matter the race, age, or social standing without good involvement the chances of success are less. Poverty, race, and the contexts of achievement: examining educational experiences of children in the U.S. South. Social Work is a study done on younger children to show that economical standing is a hug factor in educational needs. "The school achievement gap between poor and nonpoor children is troublingly high"

Thesis-

The problem needs to be solved before children turn into adults, there needs to be more life skills training in schools, and more emphasis on how the teachers and supports are engaging the students to better prepare for adulthood. Adult illiteracy is a societal problem that can be improved by having more engagement between students and teachers.

Global Societal Issue

I have chosen Current Species Extinction as my global societal issue. There are many reasons why this issue deserves further research. I have already learned so much about what the human race is contributing to species throughout the world becoming extinct. The issue is not the actual extinction, but the much higher rate at which it is happening. One major reason that this is happening currently is the over population of homo-sapiens. By learning what is actually going on with this topic, I feel more educated to change some of the ways that I live and resources that I use. Education is key.

Thesis Statement

The human race is contributing to a much higher extinction rate than has been recorded in the past. Human actions affect the environment, which in turn, affects the species living in that environment. The current over population of the human race is a direct reason as to why these extinctions are happening at such a rapid rate.

How this issue impacts a specific population

Let’s take bumble bees, for example. Bumble bees are currently listed on the endangered species list. They are responsible for a huge chunk of the pollination of crops. Mostly fruits and vegetables. If they were to go extinct, there would be a massive change in the foods we eat, the loss of economic benefits, and the general integrity of the natural world.

The source that I found which interested me was an article called “Is it Natural to Drive Species to Extinction?”. The article goes over how the human species is NOT causing the mass extinction any more than any other species on Earth. Our actions are no different than that of any other, we just do things more effectively.

This thought process made me think about my argument for the paper. Yes, humans are simply evolving and we are doing just what other species are doing. However, we are also taking large chunks of land, filling it with cement and building high rises. We are permanently taking away other species habitats. We are creating chemicals which are going into the ground water and killing other species using those resources.
