In developing an e-commerce presence, the first step is to have a vision of what you want to accomplish and how you hope to accomplish it. The vision includes not just a statement of mission, but also identification of your target audience, characterization of the market space, a strategic analysis, a marketing matrix, and the development timeline.
The basic business and system functionalities on an e-commerce site should include a digital catalog, a product database, customer tracking, a shopping cart/payment system, an on-site blog, a customer database, a server, a site tracking and reporting system, and an inventory management system.
