Access the Children’s Literature Matrix in our online access to PDToolkit for our Van de Walle (2013) text. You may use another source as well. This matrix provides opportunities to connect mathematical concepts to literature. Pick one children’s book that you have read or that you would like to read that relates to algebra or algebraic reasoning. You will need to read the book for this assignment.
Once you have read the book, discuss the following in your paper:
• Give a brief summary of the book.
• Which mathematical concepts are discussed in this book? Give specific examples.
• How would you incorporate this book into a math lesson? Be specific.
o What types of questions would you ask when incorporating this book into the lesson?
o What supporting resources would you include with the lesson?
• Was the book entertaining as well as educational?
• Who would you recommend this book to (i.e., grade level audience, kindergarten teachers, middle school teachers)?
• What are the benefits for incorporating literature into a mathematics classroom?
Be sure to reference the book you selected at the end of your paper. Support your statements with evidence from the required studies and your research. See the following link from NCTM (http://illuminations.nctm.org/LessonDetail.aspx?id=L713) for an example of how one teacher incorporated the book One Grain of Rice into a math lesson (Simon, 2008). Please pick a different book for your own paper. This book (One Grain of Rice) should not be used in your paper.
