Unit 3.3 DB: Immigration

Historically, the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island were the entry points for immigrants seeking refuge and opportunity in the United States.  Engraved on a bronze plaque inside the Statue of Liberty is a poem by Emma Lazarus that reads “…Give me your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free, the wretched refuse of your teeming shore.  Send these, the homeless, tempest-tost to me, I lift my lamp beside the golden door!”

This past year, an increasing number of South and Central American minors have illegally entered the United States.  Read the following article by the BBC from July 23, 2014 or research the current news on this issue (remember to provide your source).  Summarize the issue in one or two sentences.  How should the U.S. respond to these children illegally crossing the border?  How may the carrying capacity and availability of resources in the United States play into our response?
