The difference between management and leadership is a relatively old discussion in the business and management literature. However, the conceptual difference is still very relevant in today’s business environment. Understanding the difference and how to realize your own leadership and management style will help to prepare you for success in a Hospitality organization.

First, listen to the audio and view the PowerPoint slides here regarding a leadership challenge encountered by the President and CEO of a non-profit organization.

Then read about leadership styles in the PDF document attached and then respond to the following checklist items:

Checklist:

• Describe the difference between management and leadership.
• Who is your ideal leader and why? Describe his/her leadership style. Differentiate his/her leadership style from their management style.
• Discuss why you trust them as a leader? As a Manager? How does your leadership style compare to that of your ideal leader?
• Discuss what your strengths and weaknesses are in terms of your leadership style, and how you will develop your leadership style in the future. Be sure to include how you would address the leadership challenge in the PowerPoint audio presentation.
