Ideals of social capital and civic engagement developed early in the United States and became a significant
strength in the fabric of our nation. They have become iconic emblems of what it means to be a citizen of
this country. Today's move to systems of social networking has been used to enhance public participation in
decision making, resource allocation, and public value.
Using the resources you located and the two Web sites you explored in this unit's first study, describe
methods of global sharing in today's society. Continue by analyzing their impact on the concept of social
networking as a means of public participation as defined by de Tocqueville and Putnam. Make sure to
include references to at least three peer-reviewed sources in addition to the Web sites.
