Two Essay Each of it need three pages

Write one essay, around three typed pages in length,  on each of the following topics (for a total assignment of two 

essays). Make sure to refer to the texts, but don’t give lengthy quotations. Keep in mind the fact that Plato’s theory of forms is at the center of second essay. The exam is due on Monday, March 25.

1.Write an essay on Plato’s Apology that answers the following questions: What crimes is Socrates charged with in the Apology? How does 

he go about refuting the charges? How does Socrates practice philosophy, and why did he begin that practice in 

the

 first place? Does Socrates needlessly antagonize the jury, or is his way of speaking required of a true philosopher?

 How does Socrates argue against fear of death? Is his argument convincing?
2.Write an essay on the Symposiu, that answers the following questions: What is the relationship between 

Aristophanes speech in praise of love in the Symposium, and Socrates speech? (Connect the myth of the of the 

original splitting of human beings in two and their desire to become whole again in Aristophanes, with Socrates’

 argument that love is also love of what one lacks). Discuss the various mysteries of love that Diotima reveals to

 Socrates. Discuss the highest mystery, the love of Absolute beauty in the context of Plato’s theory of forms. (What is a form, how does it differ from an ordinary object of sense-experience, and what is the relation between Absolute Beauty and the forms?)
