 NOTE: This is just a sample topic. You must choose your own, preferably one that really interests you and that you want to know more about. This is due in WEEK 6.

Introduction

Cloning has been the latest hot issue to confront humanity as science and technology have allowed us to create exact copies of sheep (Dolly) and most recently, monkeys. Humans are therefore not far behind, and some scientists have actually cloned a human being and impregnated a volunteer woman with it.

The know-how and expertise are here and now several institutions like ClonaAid are advocating the use of cloning as a service to paying customers. Ethicists, religious groups, and politicians are all actively engaged in deep thought and activism on a capability thought to be impossible only a few years ago.

Main Instructions

Discuss the topic of human cloning in no more than 2,000 words (excluding ancillary and bibliographical notes) using the following guidelines. The minimum word count is 700 words, but in practical reality, there is so much information one can use that the work really is more of deciding which material to cull out than what to keep for discussion.

1)       Technical details

- How is human cloning performed? Enumerate the technical steps in producing a human adult from the precursor materials.

2)  Impact on society

Discuss the legal and social aspects of human cloning as a whole. What issues do you foresee as problem areas, and how would you propose to solve these?

3) Pros and cons

Discuss your views of human cloning based on its pros and cons. Would you advocate its use or would you unequivocally say no to it?

(Note: your views are not what will be graded but rather how you present and defend them).

Grading

The report will be graded according to the following criteria:

1)    Content - 30%

Ideally, this report should not be a cut and paste endeavor; this said, the width and depth of material used will determine the effectiveness of your document in communicating clear terminology and ideas.

2)    Analyses and defense of stance - 40%

As mentioned earlier, your stance is not the criterion for grading. It is how well you analyze, present and defend your stance in the light of the issues arising from the nature and natural consequences of the topic.

3)    Presentation and overall impact - 30%

This includes formatting, spelling and grammar, and in general reflects the overall effort put in by the student in making the report professional and readable.
